Any other AVIC users experience this?

The icons on the touch screen blink to grey out when try to use it. You will be trying to input a value (phone number / address) and the values will intermittently grey out and then back on. Same happens on menus/ home screens.

Surely not designed to be like that? Feels almost like a setting but can't find anything.

A number of the functions can only be used when the handbrake is on, in the interest of safety
Most people connect this wire permanently to ground, to be able to use all functions, regardless.
Sounds like the handbrake wire on your avic is either not connected, or connected to the handbrake. Try permanently grounding it......

Dealer must have done this as seems to be cured. With the ipod connector and other features it seems to be a very good system!
