I've just bought a used 2008 159 that has the Bose sound system with digital amplifier, plus the sat nav system with 6.5" colour screen and the blue and me phone prep. BUT none of it is working. I can set the date/time but that's about it. It looks very much like the battery has been replaced but I don't have the codes to reactivate the unit. To compound the problem I think there's a CD stuck in the slot. My local independent Alfa specialist has been unable to resolve it so I'm wondering what to do next.
I'm not particularly bothered about the sat nav but I do want a stereo and bluetooth. What options do I have? If I fit an after market unit will I effectively disable the trip computer, which seems to be tied in with the factory fitted unit? Any what about the steering wheel controls? They'll be disabled too, right?
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

I think what I'm asking is; is the CPU for the trip computer in the sat nav/radio unit or is it elsewhere with the unit just an intput/output device? If it's the latter the trip computer should still work without it, right?
And can the same be said for the reconfigurable multifunction display?

Its not quite that simple.
The satnav is part of the cars can-bus system.

I'm very surprised you have blue-tooth. The original factory satnav wasn't fitted with blue-tooth, it had a tray in the top middle to put your sim card in.

Are you sure its a factory fit satnav and not a after market or retro fit. Photo would help.

Thanks for your reply coxy1. Actually you're right, there is a SIM tray, which I assume is part of the Blue&Me system. But I haven't been able to even attempt to connect a phone so I haven't crossed that bridge yet.
Please excuse me ignorance, what is the cars can-bus system?

You wont have blue me with the factory fitted satnav, unless its some quirk with the Bose upgrade.

Not sure if you have any owners manuals which will explain the phone operation on the satnav, if not have a look on here.

I also have the factory satnav and it most defiantly does not have blue me.

Can bus is some communication/diagnostic protocol that the car uses to talk and test each separate component on the car.

I don't fully understand how it all works.

Ah I see. I assumed Blue&Me, but you've put me right. That makes things easier actually, as I want bluetooth so the question is now, can I rip out this unit and replace it with an after market DAB radio & bluetooth system and retain the trip computer ?

Now that I'm not 100% sure of the answer.

But I think its linked in to other ECU's and would cause issues that I don't think a proxy alignment would fix.
Its not really my field all this computery stuff.

Thanks coxy1. Tomorrow I'm going to speak to my local independent Alfa garage and an auto sounds specialist. I'll update this thread after that to let you know what I find out.

Don't forget the satnav is bigger than a normal double din head unit, just to make things even more awkward, so a normal double din with fall through the hole

Just back from Autosounds. They say they can't help me with the factory fitted unit but they can supply a bit of kit that will wire in an after market system into the can bus for the 159, preserving the Bose speaker system, the reconfigurable multifunction display and the trip computer. So all is good I think. Now I just need to decide what the replacement system will be.

Try plugging something like dension gateway to the CD changer socket - that should get you Bluetooth with A2DP.. Check if you have a CD changer slot first though... This way you can keep the current head unit. A few people have used this kit here.. Not sure if it was with the head unit with navigation though..
