Let's be fair Alfas in general and the 159 aren't really mass market and didn't sell in great numbers.

Most 159s are now starting to be owned by Alfa enthusiasts rather than general car buyers. They're high maintenance, lots of the parts are expensive and the public perception is still that they're not very reliable.

It's not helped by the dealer reputation either. They've only just started doing PDIs for goodness sake!

Hi All

I was a little shocked to read this report on shortlived cars - apparently there are only 8000 159s left (in GB?) and only 1500 Spiders!

I wonder where they get the figures from?

Cheers
James

Here possibly - https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/family/alfa_romeo_159

If I'm interpreting the figures correctly there were a maximum of 207 TBi TIs on the road and there are still 191 Mot'd - no wonder it took me so long to find one!

....not great examples! Both are far rarer and less ugly (for their intended purpose and their time at least) than the Panda. If looking weird is what makes a classic for you then go get yourself a Multipla before the values rocket...or not! The fiat is mass produced and, in my opinion, not pretty. A true classic is rare, pretty and desirable...or better still all three. My other car is a 69 Charger by the way......so that's three out of three! Imo...of course.

OK, so 'true' classic, is probably a stretch - Modern classic is probably more likely....

We all know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder... I really don't think it's that bad, and given it's a modern interpretation it can't detract too much from the original, I also think the stance and the lukewarm bodykit go a long way to improving it over standard looks. I can think of some true classic cars that I can't stand the look of, but will surely have a following, Daimler SP250, Triumph Stag, TR5

Mass produced or not, the 100hp model only saw 2000 models hit the UK, so as they invariably get binned, fail mechanically or get scrapped for other reasons, that number will fall dramatically - think of it as another Peugeot 205 GTI, or Mk1 Golf GTi, both good cars, now starting to fetch reasonable money

Envious you have a charger btw... not terribly envious of the fuel bills though!

If kept long enough, any car will become a classic! Including a Panda.
According to that site, there is only 41 of my car (GT Selespeed) left in the UK.
Rarer than a Lamborghini Aventador :biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh: haha

Something that was known to be rubbish and as a consequence only sold in tiny numbers DOES NOT make it a classic!
Selespeed had an awful reputation.

You say that, but go to any Classic car event and there are plenty of Allegros, Princesses, etc etc. Crap cars really but loved and in great condition and as such, classics.

I absolutely love the GT and it will undoubtedly be a future classic, but I'd never have a Selespeed, not now or in 30 years' time.
Those who don't know their cars will know no different, but the classic car brigade generally know every last detail about a car.

Ofcourse the Selespeed had (and still has) a bad reputation. Although I think most of it comes down to mechanics having a lack of knowledge about the system (some specialists excluded), mechanics simply replacing the whole Selespeed unit for what could be a simple fix and leaving the owner with huge bills to pay -> bad reputation.
If well maintained and properly calibrated, it's actually really fun to drive a Selespeed.
Not that I think a GT Selespeed will ever become a classic, although as mentioned before there have been more ****ty cars which have become classics in the end.

It's difficult to quantify what's going to be a future classic or desirable car.
A few years back Austin metros were given away, but to find one now, tricky.
I think a lot of it comes down to a time on our life and the cars we drove at that point.
For me all the cars from my youth that id love to own again are now either impossible to find or outrageously expensive.
My first car a Fiat strada 85s all but gone.
Another Ford Escort XR3 (not the i) outrageously expensive.

I have a 99 Fiat Marea 130HLX weekend tucked away in a barn that is currently worth nothing despite there only being 11 left and only 8 of those on the road, mine being one of three 3 sorned and waiting to be worth something one day if ever.
But it costs me nothing to keep it and every once in a while i take it around some farmland.

Meanwhile three door Sierra cosworths can fetch over 100k. I can dream.
