That must have cost a small fortune for that many miles!

Must have been worth every penny
It was! Biggest costs were the numerous cam belt etc changes, the most expensive was at Mangoletsi main dealer in Cheshire for the 1st change when the car was three years old in 2004, I was working 2 miles away - £1400 plus more for a few of bits and pieces!

As you say, worth every penny!

😎

Welcome to 916 ownership, I hope you end up loving it. They’ll go wrong now and again but repay you 10x over. Looks great, especially with the best wheels.

Thoroughly enjoying enjoy driving the GTV, luv the gearbox.. :), got the boot to close without slamming it ..... sorted the central locking, now all works thanks to WD40, found the remote boot release lurking in the glove box :D:D:D
Next job is to adjust the windows as drivers glass sticks out, though I have to take the door card off as one the one on the car has a hole in and the seller supplied a replacement :p
DAB radio I think next too, do miss Absolute Radio

So I have an appointment to look at a GTV I'm truly interested in. It looks good on paper.

I'm just a bit shaky about GTV ownership still and specially daily driving one. I'm not a tinkerer and would be mainly relying on specialists for most things. I have replaced my own heads, changed my own spark plugs etc. But at this point in my life I might not have the time to do much myself. So GTV ownership is scaring me a bit and it has always been the case. It's the reason I have not bought one so far.

But I always loved Alfa and specially the GTV. So I think if I don't do it now, I never will. Of course, every single person I know saying I'm crazy for wanting to buy an old Alfa and specially daily drive it doesn't help. But oh boy, is there a prettier car than a 916? Or one which looks and seems so special?

the same people that wouldn’t bat an eyelid at driving a 5-8 year old German car where every single thing that goes wrong is another £500. Mechanically, in terms of keeping you going, there’s not a lot that goes wrong that costs megabucks. I booked in for a new radiator this week at £300 all in, shockers weren’t too expensive either. They aren’t drenched in sensors and pointless crap that 2010s cars seem to be plagued with.
Also the community on here is fantastic, the 916 section is always there if you need anything. Replies are always fast and there’s some very knowledgeable people on here who can help far in excess of what I can.

The last couple of 916 spiders I’ve seen were middle aged women, so should it be his/hers. Or were they their husband’s cars?

If you find a decent local specialist it can be fine if you no longer want to tinker. I stopped using a well known specialist because they wouldn't give me a firm price on repair work and always used to find more things to do. Recently called up to possibly get a Quaife and stainless manifold fitted but was told the price will depend on how hard the bolts were to get out. Whereas my local specialist gave me a price there and then.

Another way to look at it, my 156 V6 has cost me a fair bit to run. £1k a year on maintenance when it's a good year. That is still less than someone paying PCP on a BMW 120i or whatever.

I mentioned before but the main thing is just keeping on top of potential rust. Don't let the underside get too manky...

The 916 cars are decent on rust - galvanised shells with lots of plastic bits. Sills need keeping an eye on, but they are one of the best ‘modern classic’ Alfas regarding rust. Just check the MOT history.

MoT history and rust aren't always mutual.

My 156 passed its MoT fine last year but still needed nearly a bag of sand rebuilding a rear arch.

There's far worse out there, Alfa's of that era don't really get panel rust no.

I’m glad your 156 is ok now. I suppose the killer is accident damage on 916s. I once saw one where the filler was getting stuck to my fingers in the arches. It had a nasty prang and thank god I avoided it.
A good rule of thumb is to buy from an Alfa nut, maybe even the classifieds here, who know their cars inside out. I would avoid dealers like the plague.
