Hi Guys,

Random dash message I've been having for a month or two, only usually appears on first start or if left for a few hours between starting.

Car usually struggles to get going, but afterwards everything is fine.

The messages are:

Anti-Pollen Fliter Clogged
Excessive Radiator Fluid

I'm going to buy a new filter and replace, but yesterday I could definitely smell a distinct aroma of coolant in the cabin when driving.

Coolant level is correct as I topped it up not long ago.

Sometimes, I do get a bit of white smoke on start aswell, I think you would call it a 'laboured' start. Battery was replaced about 3/4 years ago.

No dash warning lights are on other than the above on occasional starts.

Any ideas?

Cheers.

Did you top the coolant up when the engine was fully cold (left overnight)?
The only time I've ever needed to top mine up was when I had a leak, never in normal running.

The coolant was topped up last about a year ago, noted it was low before I took it in for a service last month, topped it up to between min / max marker (it had dropped just below min marker).

You think I might have a leak? Dripping onto something which is causing the white smoke i.e being burnt off on start?

Was originally thinking you may have excess coolant in and it was being burned off.
Coolant can be at different levels depending on whether a hot or cold engine.

Hmm, could be, I just checked the coolant level and it has dropped way below minimum now. Can't see any signs of leakage i.e pools on the floor, wet hoses e.t.c

Car has been sitting idle for a good 16 hours.

Either way I think I will investigate it, it's the only thing that causes me issue with the car now.

Cheers.

Could be head gasket if no sign of leak.
Keep a very close eye on things.

That's the last thing I need.

In terms of symptoms:

~ I occasionally, on first start I get white smoke blown out, but its faint and is blown out instantly.
~ Engine temps good.
~ Coolant level drops about an inch a month (1000 miles)
~ Engine appears to be running fine, no rough idling, no skipping or hesitancy.
~ No blown caps or excessive pressure from unscrewing / putting them back on.
~ No obvious signs of leakage on hoses.
~ Engine oil normal colour, not milky.
~ Anti-Pollen Filter Clogged / Excessive Radiator Fluid warning began around the time I had issues with my EGR valve clogging which was removed and blanked.
~ Shuddery starts maybe once a day with Anti-Pollen Filter Clogged / Excessive Radiator Fluid warning (Sometimes I don't get the warning message).
~ On a side note I did also get the a 'Temperature Sensor / Coolant sensor error' at one point aswell, just can't remember the exact code.

Just started car , and it did the faint white smoke after a little cough on start. Turned off. Started again fine. Popped bonnet, no leakage to note, oil all correct colour, no odd sounds, temps at 50degrees solid on idle. I do have some ReDex Diesel cleaner in there, but it has been doing this prior to me putting this in anyhow.

Also note this shuddery starting has started to get bad since the plug on the fuel filter came loose and spilt diesel over the road and engine. Not sure if due to the pressure lost in the fuel filter that I now need to replace as it was replaced I think with my service one month ago.

Yeah, like I said though it only ever rears its head once a day on the first start, never again. Odd.

I wouldn't be too concerned if it wasn't for the smoke and shuddering start.

Alfa joe.......I had the same thing happen to mine couple of months ago, I replaced the battery with a new one issue sorted out immediately. Apparently you can get very spurious warnings when battery is on a weak charge or is reaching end of life, it started up fine etc. My faulty battery looked non standard so has been replaced at least once in its life which could equate to 4 yrs each approx.

I took my pollen filter out because the blower was wheezy at best. What a difference now it has gone and yet on my 2006 159 never mentioned pollen filter. Maybe it is only later cars.

Thanks guys, will replace filter and if needed new battery as it is over-due a replacement.

I'll take it in at the end of the month and probably do the following along with a few other things:

Coolant Temperature sensor replace
New Bosch S5 Battery
Power steering res replace & new fluid (Squeaky wheel)
Glow plugs?
New Coolant bottle / Check for leaky hoses.

In Jan may have to replace Radiator as when I have had the bumper off a good portion of fins look a little worn, may just need a flush but I'll see what advice I get.

Will report on how it goes.

Cheers for the help.

By worn, as I don't know what is good or bad, it looks more or less like this..
