Not me but my 20v. A fairly high pitched whine starts around 2k and gets really loud from 2.5k and up. At idle there's no noise. Everything else seems OK, she certainly isn't lacking performance. It seems to be coming from the timing belt area; the belt is due to be changed on Tuesday.

Am I taking a risk in using the car?

Auxillary belt was changed in the spring along with everything associated with it, (idlers, tensioner, aircon pump, power steering pump, alternator - bottom pulley was done the previous year). No much other than the cam belt to go

You're right, as water pumps have been known to take out the cam belt I'll be walking over the weekend.
