Hi all,

Well, were should I start... I've joined as I'm on a look out for a new car as my current one is practical, reliable, good mpg and performances but, in the past 6 months I've owned it I haven't fall in love with and I want a change.
First car was a Lancia Y10 when I was 18 back in Italy, I moved to the UK at 22 and owned cheap fords, the usual Golf, high performance jap motors and now a skoda.

I'm now looking around for various types, Japs (low mpg for a fun car) Golf/Vag (overpriced at times boring) BMW (overpriced) and obviously ALFA which seems to tick most boxes. 159 or Giulietta would be the favourite choice but out of budget, so, that's were the 156 come into play.
In the days to come, I'll be coming around to look into what I think is the most frequent question, reliability... main problem for me is that the car will be mainly used for really short journeys were the engine doesn't have time to warm up properly, causing the usual batteries and starter motor issues (currently using the wife KA which cost me £1000 3 years ago).

156 has become a real contender as it's a good looking, grown up, drivers car and some good examples are going for silly money.

Thank you for the warm welcome and sorry not not replying earlier, the Skoda is in the process to be sold and hopefully all goes ok, it's amazing how many time waster are around those days. I've been offer a seat cupra R which I'm tempted as are proper little rockets with an easy achievable 290bhp and 30mpg on the other hand, Alfa is more refined, grown up and stylish.
Had a look around to get some info and I'm a bit weary of the 156 reliability and overall. Just seen a 159 for sale on here which is just over budget but not by too much:).
Couple of question for you guys, are the 156 reliability issues that bad, what sort of mpg people gets from the 156 GTA? On the 159, everyone says that diesel engines are better overall but is there an equivalent petrol engine worth considering ( happy to get 30 mpg)

Thanks
Alex

Me again, I'll keep all my pre sale question here so that I don't clatter the place.

Is 30mpg realistic for a 2.2 jts?

You're better off looking at the dozens of mpg threads in those lounges.

It doesn't sound too bad though and I can't compare it with mine as 1) it's a TS 2) I only know that it does 400 miles to a tank on average and actually don't know the mpg.

Just got a serious offer for my car, unfortunately only £4700 but I'm hitching for a change..

I'll try to hunt down a 156 petrol nearby so that I can have a proper test drive, I would be looking for a facelift petrol 2/2.2L TI or JTS sportwagon in black, good conditions full service history and around 60K miles. Do I have a realistic budget? The only thing that puts me off is the £450 service costs when it come to camb belt and watr pump....

That GTA looks pretty special. Pop it in the GTA lounge and we will all see it, and people will be able to help you. Do you fancy a SW?

I would be interested to know where abouts it is in Wilts, Loz from Autolusso might go have a look at if for you.
