Well, after reading a good few projects on here, and as my own is hopefully nearing completion, I decided to share my journey.
When i began this it was never planned to take as long, or indeed cost as much as it has, but once you get so far in it kind of escalated a bit, as these things tend to.
So it started back in 2015 (yes it has took some time) when i got a cheapish 147 that needed a bit of tidying up, it looks ok in the picture but was the typical 10 shades of red, had a decent oil leak which i suspected was the cooler, but it also had an absolute stack of bills and history with only 2 owners, and had also had a recent engine rebuild by a well known specialist.

So after getting it home, and having lots of fun driving it i started looking at the source of the oil leak, which didn't seem to be from the cooler, but locating the source was being a pain, so as i had thought about losing the pre cats, and also it didn't seem as if the alternator had ever been changed i decided to drop the engine out.

Now I'm no mechanic so this was a big job for me, last time i removed an engine was from an Opel Manta back in 1993 because I blew the old one up, and me and my mate lifted that out with a rope and a plank of wood.
But once it was out i decided it was a good chance to do as much as possible, and also give it a clean up.

So a long winter was spent in the garage, cleaning parts, some were powder coated, some painted, but every bit was done, and i also rebuilt the alternator, got some cf2 manifolds from Dan at Autolusso (would have loved wizards but couldn't afford them), and i also stripped and rebuilt the bottom end as i had traced this as the source of the oil leak, and also replaced the main and big end bearings and oil pump while i was there.

And after an hour or two I sort of got the engine back together,, ok i did also replace every sensor, new coils, tidied up the wiring loom, and obviously changed the cam belt and water pump etc etc.
Then i saw Gotcha's thread when he relocated the oil filter and decided that seemed a good idea!!!

So I did that as well.

Thanks guys.
Well once the engine was sorted i turned to the rest of the car, with everything stripped off the subframe, transmission tunnel and rear subframe were all blasted and coated to protect them, and the rest of the shell stripped ready for paint.

While some of this was happening, the car was shipped off to A1pha paint in South Sheilds for her new party frock.
This took a while as the guys did the job in their down time to save costs, and I am very grateful to them for doing it, plus they did an awesome job, even though my paint choice gave them some headaches.
If anybody needs a respray I really can't recommend them enough.

And finally the end result.
It is a mix of 4c competizione rosso, but with a twist that Paul recommended, he added extra metal flake so when the sun hits it it really pops out.
I have to say the pictures don't do it justice, but here it is the day i picked it up.

I think you under estimate yourself if you regard yourself ‘as no mechanic’. Top work. Not an easy job to remove, clean, replace and do all this on what looks like the driveway.

Agreed. I would consider myself 'no mechanic'; This is way beyond anything I would even contemplate.

Thanks guys, I'm looking forward to getting it back on the road too, hopefully in the next few months.

Did suffer a small set back this week as the plan was to refit all the interior which has been sat in the spare bedroom waiting, after refitting the windscreen and side windows.

All went well with the fitting, and i was pretty chuffed as with many jobs I've done on this car it was a new job for me.

Sadly when i went back earlier this week a crack had sprung out from the bottom left corner of the screen, i can only assume either i have stressed it, or its been nicked when it was removed, either way its due for replacement on Tuesday, then i can finish the interior off.

I suppose better now than after its all back together, except i would have had windscreen insurance then :disappointed:

But the crack clearly happened after you put the car together and started using it right? ;) hinthint

Great job on a great car. Can’t wait to finish my 166 restoration but 2/3 through I had to make it driveable coz the daily GT started acting up. Dropping the engine is quite the task - well done.
Love the rosso comp.colour as well, chose the same for my valve covers! :D

Great work. Love the attention to detail on the subframe -the bits that no one gets to see.
Ha ha, thanks for that, all the little bits like that have taken a lot of time, and the Mrs thinks I'm mad, because nobody see's them, hard to get my point across sometimes.

And on that same subject, my next stage was the underside, see what I did there?

To be honest this was probably one of the most laborious jobs of them all. The entire underside was stripped back, which wasn't easy as the car was only about 2 foot off the ground.
Luckily mine seemed to have been well treated from the factory as it only had a few light surface rust patches, and all of those pesky drain flaps were totally intact and fairly clean both inside and out.

Then I used a salt remover to strip any contamination and treated all the rust, and next for future protection I applied 3 coats of a very heavy duty 2 part epoxy mastic, followed by a good few coats of a clear high temperature wax.

This stuff is pretty tough, but not as dense as say waxoyl, and needs recoating around every 2 years in normal use ,but as I won't be using the car in winter and it won't do lots of miles i can live with that as it looks nicer.

After about 4 months the results were pretty good.
Also replaced all the brake lines while i was there as they had a few dodgy bits on them.

I agree, looking at this thread and the work you have done.....you are something much more skilled, love the attention to detail, I'm in awe.
