To start, a quick thanks to all the people who offer advice here. You have restored my faith in the human race and some sections of the motor industry in particular.
Purchased a 147 1.6 TS 16v in May 2005 from IAC in Brussels, Belgium. Belatedly took it in for 40 thousand km service (it had 49 thou on the clock) to the same dealer. The man said they should inspect the cambelt, I said fine but call if you need to change it. received no call but a bill for 850 odd EURO when I went pick it up. They had changed it. It was only after this shock that I found this excellent website and became more informed.

questions regarding the invoice:
Do I need 2 air filters, part no. 46799653?
I was also billed for 1 cambelt, part no. 71719649 and 2 "belts", part no. 71739915. Does this make sense?

thanks in advance to anyone who can put me straight.

Incidently, the day I picked it up from said service the cambelt went after 450 kms, with the same results described too many times on this site. Escaped serious accident by sheer luck (it occured on a busy stretch of the A3 autbahn near Aschaffenburg). Had the engine replaced in the nearest garage, who are now billing me cca EURO 5 500 as Alfa Romeo Germany refuse to cough up. BTW, the German guy, an authorised dealer, said in Gemany they recommend the cambelt to be changed at 90 000 kms (they told me 60 000 kms in Belgium). I am of course not going to pay and am complaining, but any other helpful sugestions would be welcome.

Such a shame, 'cos I was advised by many people not to buy an Alfa, and was happily proving them all wrong until this happened. and I do love the car.

The 1.6 doesn't have a balance belt so therefore it would only need two belts - the cam belt and the auxiliary belt.

It would seem that the garage changed the belts but not the tensioners and one of the cam belt tensioners has failed.

many thanks. The items on the bill were in French so its all Dutch to me. Seems they were pollen filters. Will complain about the third belt and let you know if I get a result.
