Android Auto wireless and widescreen myth busting

Hello all, just wanted to make sure that nobody out there has successfully got AA working widescreen with an AA adapter.

There's been a fair bit of discussion about this on the forum with people claiming they have it working, but not actual screenshots showing it, or product links that work, and I'm thinking it's not something I can expect to ever have working in my 2019 car, it's just a myth.

The only wireless box that is mentioned on other threads that seems to work is the AA Wireless one from Amazon for about 70 quid,. That one also doesn't do widescreen, and for me, I don't care if I have to plug in AA because I don't use it that often, so spending 70 quid just to remove the cable is a bit expensive.

So, I've just shipped in a cheapo 'AI' device from China to test out whether something else would work, as it looked like it should fit the bill. It doesn't work in my car, just doesn't connect because it says 'start AA on your car' and of course the Alfa doesn't work like that. I chose this device because it was highly reviewed, seems to be popular, and has both AA and Carplay. I will lob it on eBay and recover my costs, but just wanted to check that actually nobody has succeeded in getting this to work. I'm sure my box will likely work with Apple devices just because AA is a bit hopeless!!

thanks in advance!

I use AA Wireless and it's excellent. Stable and reliable. Connects quickly. But... it will not give you wide screen. Sadly.

I bought a cheap adapter from Aliexpress that allegedly did this but I couldn't get it to work at all.

The only way that I am aware of to achieve it reliably is to use the Eng Custom box or replace the infotainment with the latest version.

Thanks, same route as me - well, I suppose i'll make a few quid on reselling the box :)

So I have a Stelvio 2019, has AA and CarPlay, obviously have the AA small screen issue. I am a member on another forum and was advised to get a box which when you connect AA it converts it to Apple CarPlay. I now have full screen Google maps and can split Spotify with maps etc.
The box was from Amazon, smaller than I thought, works very well and 70 quid.
Will look for a link.
Is this what your after ?

I already have the AAWireless dongle. Mine doesn't connect wide-screen at all. In fact, it doesn't connect for CarPlay, just Android Auto.

So from memory when you install the app and connect the phone to the dongle change
The following to:

Received beta updates

and on one of the tiled boxes
AA over CP enabled

Let me know how you get on.
Okay. I've enabled the beta updates and downloaded a new update. I'll try and find the AA over CP option in the car tomorrow! I'm looking forward to having widescreen AA... Fingers crossed!

No factory AA came with my car so installed the Eng-custom box that several forum members have done as well. Been using wireless AA / car play ever since - over two years now. You can choose to either split the screen between maps / spotify or any app or use maps as full screen. So not clear what you mean by "people claiming they have it working, but not actual screenshots showing it,". Will make a small video for you if time permits..

I think people assume having the wireless dongle option AA will work but it doesn't AA or Lfa incorrect coding I'm not sure, and so the option was the Eng Custom mod which works great, your right. Is about ÂŁ300 as I recall.

This dongle converts your AA phone connection to Car Play and works pretty well at ÂŁ70.

Got my AA Wireless dongle to display full screen, as shown by @panstee08 above.

This is the process and some pointers:

In the AA Wireless app go to updates and enable Recieve beta updates.

As you can see above mine updated to v3.3.2

Then go to settings in the AA Wireless app (the cog in the top right). And scroll down to the bottom. You should have a new section called CarPlay (BETA).
Image

At the bottom you will see the option to enable AA over CP.

Once you do this, the Infotainment system will detect the AA Wireless Dongle as a CarPlay device, so instead of seeing Android Auto on the main menu you will see CarPlay. Once connected Android Auto displays across the full width of the Infotainment screen.

Hi! New here, I'm Daniele from Italy so sorry for my english.

I got an Alfa Romeo 2017,and i just bought the same dongle you are currently using, the AA Wireless (the original one) but i just cannot show AA in fullscreen mode.
First i just updated the firmware, now I think i got v4.4.0 if I remember correctly with BETA updates enabled too.
I flagged the option Enable CP and the most important one, CP over AA. But my car won't recognise it as CP.
I tried everything and the only thing missing from my car to enable CP properly is only one. I just got ONE USB inside my tunnel, and looking into some forums i read that you must have the double USB in order to be able to get CP working.
I think your dongle worked because you had already the double USB and for me, it's not working because I have the single one.
Can you check please and tell me if it's like that?
If it is like that, the only thing I can do is to change the USB andhope to see the dongle working like yours!

Thank you!

As @panstee08 says the navigation is tricky. There are essentially two modes.
When I first connected, Android Auto was in split screen. Using the rotary navigation knob I could do the following. Rotating would 'jump' me to between the 3 different areas of the screen. The menu on the right, the large panel in the middle and the smaller panel on the left.
Image

In that 'mode' you couldn't go through the different parts of each panel, such as selecting a different app from the menu panel on the right.

In order to be able to navigate the panel I push the rotary control to the left and hold for approx 3 seconds. Then you can only navigate around the panel. To switch back to panel hopping mode, I push the rotary control to the left again for approx 3 seconds.

Pushing the control to the right or down doesn't appear to do anything. Pushing it up gives you the shortcuts to Radio, Media etc. as usual.

The only issue I have found so far is that when I press the phone button on my steering wheel it jumps out of Android Auto and uses the infotainment call system. That seemed to crash everything out. However, you can use the usual voice control and say "Call NAME" and that works fine in Android Auto.

This is a BETA implementation of the CarPlay software and things may change as they iron out any bugs. I also haven't played with the settings to see if anything changes with those.

You can of course go to full screen rather than have the split screen. I love having maps on full wide-screen tbh.

I can get AA full screen in my 2021 year Giulia with the AA Wireless Adapter.
Just select the 9 dots in the bottom right corner that takes you to the main Apps page. From there select the Google Maps icon and it comes up full screen.

Yes, the later infotainment does implement full screen Android Auto but the earlier cars don't. That 2/3 screen implementation I've been stuck with has always irritated me. But not anymore!

thanks everyone, I especially @panstee08 @marknewton1971 - really appreciate the screenshots - you've demonstrated that it can be done without having to break out the screwdrivers.

Also good to see this problem was solved in the later cars. Unfortunately my car missed that new stereo by six months...

I'm still talking to the seller of the wireless box I have, not expecting any miracles, but if he figures out how to make it work I will post here. Otherwise, you can assume I'll probably recoup my costs by selling it as a CarPlay wireless box - it probably works just fine in that role.

A question for those who are using the AA Wireless BETA option of AA over CP.

I'm having some call handling issues. People can hear me but I can hear them. The sound in the call isn't going to the car speakers. Is anyone else having this problem?

I have used the ottocast PICASOU 2 in my 2022 Giulia Estrema. It works really well.But..... it cost around ÂŁ200.00.And covers the whole screen. Perhaps this may help.
