THE JTD OIL and FILTER RECOMMENDATION THREAD ETC ETC ETC

Afternoon,

So my 156 has done the typical loveable Alfa thing.

I bought a nice set of Pirelli P7s, new Bosch wiper blades.

The Pirellis are great, silent but harbour loads of grip.

Problem one - Top intercooler pipe is duff so I shall be ordering a Samco one from Alfa Workshop and I may change to bottom pipe just so I know all is done.

Problem two - Batt, engine bay is tarnished in oil and fibers from the duff hose

More importantly, I want to get the car serviced and I plan on getting the service kit from Alfa Workshop (£93.62 inc VAT). The price includes oil, which leads to my next question.

The oil - Petronas (Selenia) WR 5W-40, is it any good or should I look for something else but still get the filters??

Fire away chaps and Chapesses

(upgrade engine oil)

MILLERS -
MOBIL -
FUCHS -
MOTUL -

Which would you go for??? experience based???

Hi, I'm sure you will be able to source a set of filters and oil cheaper than that, euro car parts usually have deals on for service parts.
With regards to the oil I would just get what ever correct grade known brand oil is on offer at the time.
I usually use Comma Syner d in my car, about £25 for 5 liters so cheap enough to change it more frequently

Petronas is fine, as it meets the new SN spec for engine oil and has Mercedes Benz, BMW and Porsche accreditation, I always used Millers and then Shell Helix 5-40, however, when I serviced mine last, the Petronas was on offer at Euro Car Parts and I did some research and I bought it, my JTDm seems to be slightly smoother on it, probably because it is new engine oil, lol. I would always use a genuine Purflux oil filter or a Mann filter.

Just had a look at ECP

Crossland - Air, Fuel & Oil filters
UFI - Polen Filter

Shell Helix 10W-40 (performance??)

Total inc vat and discount code - £48.73

What was the Shell oil like in your JTDm Dhillon ??

Forget 10W40. After an oil change in winter because the engine seemed noisy, I went and had another oil change to 5W40 - proved to be much better with no rattles etc.

You have identified that 5W40 is recommended and I would stick to that grade - purely my experience and loss of money in having 2 oil changes in quick succession that dictates this. I went for Valvoline 5W40 - think it is called syn power (?). there are two oils that Valvoline do in that grade as far as I know - I went for the one that is not the blend. I got 5 litres for around £45 ish. I won'te be using anything else and certainly will not be going back to 10W40 regardless of the recommendations from anyone.

Always use a 5-40 fully synth, I used Shell Helix 5-40 fully synth, never use 10-40 in the 16 Valve Jtdm. I would not use the Crossland oil filter either, the Purflux/genuine or the Mann are better at filtration rather then the generic crossland one from ECP, I did use a Crossland airfilter, as the genuine UFI one looked very cheaply made (In China!!) and had fewer slats! I know I am picky, but my ex 147 JTD and my current 156 never use any oil and they are regularly driven hard and take us to the continent every summer! I have always used fully synth 5-40 with both of my Alfas.

Ok,

So stick with the Helix 5-40 fully syn.

What about Bosch filters?? unless somebody can link the best filters to use.

Bosch filters have varying reviews when you google search them, especially on the American websites. The genuine Purflux/Alfa oil filters are the best, as they have a chevron pleat inside of them which bascially means that it has more oil filter material in them, and therefore are more efficient at filtering oil. Mann filters are also very good!

Ok so here we go.

Just called GSF car parts and checked the part numbers to see who manufactures them (premium filter range)

Air Filter - Purflux
Oil Filter - Mann Filter
Fuel - Purflux

What do you think?

Just seen your post Dhillon

Petronas Syntium 3000 AV 5W-40 £26.34 - ?? is that the oil you purchased ?

Hi, the above filters are fab! I purchased two four litre bottles of this:-

Petronas 4Ltr Syntium 3000 5W-40

The Petronas Syntium 5-40 AV is a low ash engine oil, and as our cars do not have the awful DPF filters in the exhaust you do not need this oil, just buy the normal Petronas Syntium 3000 5-40 fully synth engine oil and you will be fine. Plus it's a tad cheaper then the low ash version. Euro car parts are having a discount on the engine oil if you put the following code into the check out on their web page: HOT30

Excellent... Some answers on which filters to use.

What does everybody use when it comes to these guys:

1. Brake fluid
2. Power steering fluid
3. Coolant/anti-freeze

Like you PropWarp I've considered the Alfa Workshop service pack but adding the recommended items on makes it very expensive. I don't mind paying for quality but I get the impression Alfa would sell me Tutela screenwash if they could, at £8 a litre for coolant alone it's a little steep. As I don't know which fluids are already in the car (1.9 JTDm 16v) I may as well have them changed, pick a good product and stick to it. Petronas looks interesting at £25 for a 4ltr bottle, if I'm not mistaken Selenia is a brand name under Petronas. I'll try and stick to the Perflux filters where possible as these seem to be popular.

Cheers for a helpful discussion people.

Baxter,

Something which was highlighted above was the UFI filters, cheap chinese, exactly what Alfa Workshop are selling in the kit. Glad I have been steered away from the kit and to source from either ECP or GSF.

GSF being the better to supply the filters.
Oil -120FI0070
Fuel -121FI0160
Air -122AL0040
Cabin -123FI0120 (Active Carbon)

ECP being the better to supply the oil.
Petronas 4L - 521772471

DONT FORGET THE DISCOUNT CODES (if there is an offer)

The Above are for the 156 1.9 JTDm 16v (2005) I would imagine they would fit the GT and 147 but dont hold me to that. :)

Still fairly cheap when you buy two and add the HOT30 discount code... :D

Helpful if your engine is the handful that eats oil

Seeing as it is recommended and pushes smoother running and exceeds most specs, I am won

Better value than Castrol

Oh BTW... pipe has been fixed for temp till I get my hands on the Samco Hose, I hope I see some improved throttle response and driving characteristics once fitted.

Any body here had it swaped over??

The good lady gave me the wrong oil.... it is the AV stuff.... Shall I just use it or send it back.. It isnt an issue if its ok to use.

I would imagine it should be ok.
