Well, the cause of the burning smell, smoke and the battery light coming on was the alternator saying bye bye! See my thread below:

Thread linky here

So, first things first, I bought the car from a trader and I bought 12 months warranty with it, 3 months remain, and the alternator is covered, so I shall be making a claim in the morning. I've never had to make a claim on a car warranty before, and I dont really trust them, so who knows if my claim will be successful.

Either way, I still need to use the car to get me to work etc, so I am charging the battery as we speak, and I will be refitting it in the morning to get me to work (I realise this isnt ideal, but like evryone else, I need to get to work).

Am I risking anything by driving the car with a duff alternator? Obviously the aux belt is still there etc?

With respect the belt is strong enough and its tension is such that if the alternator suddenly completely siezes it could get the cambelt to jump a tooth your decision.
