Wheel Cleaning

The following 2 products were mentioned to me so i thought I would give them a go.

Dragon's Breath Wheel Cleaner and Poor Boy's Wheel Sealant.

I had not cleaned my car for 3 weeks and during that time did 2 x 350 mile round trips to the Midlands and the balance local driving. Approx 800 miles in all. Needless to say there was a lot of residual brake dust about.

I sprayed on the Dragon's Breath, left for 5 minutes then washed off. I only had to use the brush minimally to get into the awkward corners. After which I dried off and used the wheel sealant, which I must admit buffed up nicely.

Will monitor the situation to see how effective the sealant is.

Both products are available via the popular websites.

Photo 1 shows cleaner applied, which turns purple.
Photo 2 shows after minimal brushing and washing off.
Photo 3 (although different wheel) shows after application of Sealant.

On the subject of alloys.
I have just spent a while refurbing mine and they are polished face not painted.
I am aware there are 2 schools of thought on how to keep them that way.
1. the lacquer technique.
2. the alloy sealing wax .
Have any of you any experience to which is the best.
I'm on the side of the lacquer at the mo but would love to know what others think.
Pro's and Con's of both.

if they're clean, a coat of any old wax will protect them. and every time you wash them, they should come up like new.

How does the product last on the wheel before it needs redoing?
Mines been on about 8 months now and still going strong, will get about 1-2 years out of it I reckon with weekly cleaning.

A wax will only last 2-3 months max.

I have used various products and written reviews on them, Auto Finesse Mint Rims is excellent value for money and easy to apply if you want a wax. See the review below.

A wax and a sealant are two different ways of protecting a wheel. Sealants last much longer, typically over a year, waxes only a new months.

I would def lacquer the wheels!

did you put on more than one coat of the poorboys?. It recommends 2/3 coats.. I must say it does seem really good with one coat.. alters the look of the paint ..
also does anyone remove the wheels are do the entire rear surface too?

Yeah get the wheels off so you can thoroughly clean/de-tar/de-iron them front and back.

At the moment, due to time constraints I have only put one coat on, but will in due course up it to three as per recommendation.

A week later I have again washed the car and had no need to use the wheel cleaner, just hosed and brushed where required and they looked good. I have now applied a second coat of Poor Boys.:)

I'll be getting my alloys sealed soon with Poorboy's Wheel Sealant, they'll be getting a good wash & clay first but I'm not sure they'll clean up completely.

I'm considering getting some Iron X to see if that will help, or will that only remove contamination that I can't see anyway ?

The problem with alloy wheels is the brake dust gets baked on over time. So even with a wash and clay you might not be able to remove all of the black dirt that is essentially ingrained in the wheel finish.

Iron X is a branded name of a 'fall out remover' type product, which dissolves iron particles which have stuck to paint finishes. These products form part of the decontamination process of thoroughly cleaning a car. This will dissolve the baked on brake dust and remove it from the paint.

Fallout removers like Iron X and Dragons Breath shouldn't be used every wash. They're for removing bonded iron contamination or baked on brake dust on the wheels and bodywork, not general wheel cleaning. Use them too frequently and they'll cause damage (the first thing to suffer will be the centre caps).
I use fallout remover on my car perhaps once a year and even then I only get a minor reaction on the body panels (wheels will always give a strong reaction if they have the slightest bit of brake dust on them, that doesn't mean it's bonded contamination, it just means the brake dust has iron particles in it). Use a good PH Neutral wheel cleaner every wash and use a wheel sealant is my advice, save the fallout remover for when it's needed.

The car & wheels haven't had a good clean for more than a year, it'll be detarred & clayed first & then it'll get a fallout treatment. Once the wheels are sealed again they'll only be cleaned with shampoo.

Use wheel cleaner, tar & glue, then fallout and finally clay the wheels.
