Dear all,

I came across this old school coupe and fall in love with it.
Did my research on this car through online forums and sites..I have a strong feel on it now.

Contacted the seller and was told the car is not in a running condition.

Would like to hear from you what are the essential things to check and ask for this masterpiece?

I plan to do a full restoration for this car, parts are my main concern and I am located in Malaysia.

Appreciate if you could share me some online parts store which I can look for goods.

Appreciate your kind feedback.

Thanks

Hi and welcome :)

Whatever you need, 99% you can be sorted, so don't worry about.

I'm afraid though that you'll need to go the other way round with it. First you need to find out what you need, and then start searching.

Most important issue to look out for is the rust !
Sills, A pillars, rear wheel arches, rear hatch and on the pillars at the back.

Have you got more info on it ? Any pictures ?
Is it with inboard brakes ? outboard ?
1.5 ?
1.7 ?

Please share with us :)

It's 1.5 IE boxer (transplant alfa 33 engine). I am still talking to this guy if he can help to fire up the car for me.

It was raining yesterday and difficult to snapped some closer photo. However, The advertiser has some images posted online.

Sprint

Doesn't seem to have suffered from rust going by those pictures so that's a good start. The heater seems to be missing according the under bonnet shot. I've got some spare foglights with the fittings should you decide to go ahead with the project

Oh dear...

Well to begin with, those bumpers cant be repainted and even if you paint them on top, they will peal off.
It seems that nobody primed the plastic with the treatment suited for a paint over...

The, as already mentioned, the heater is missing, but I do see some rust in the usual places, rear hatch and top left corner of the roof ?

the wiring looks like its in a mess....

And I would bet that the A pilars are shot ! :/

The iE engine in it, just kills the Sprint spirit and uniqueness :(

So, I'll be blunt , plain and simple ,

I'M ABSOLUTELY INLOVE WITH THE SPRINT , but,
if you are going for this one, then be prepared to spend good money on it, and whatever you do, dont keep it with this engine.
Either source the 1.5 8v carb engine, and get rid of all that wiring mess as well, OR, tidy up that wiring mess, and go 1.7 16v with Carbs ;)

Parts you can find no problem, the thing though is that if you decide to go with this Sprint, you will have the same big issue I have with parts.... and thats shipping !!!

I end up paying as much , if not more, as the part costs in shipping !

Waiting for a parcel to arrive from UK now !

Original quote was, 300 pounds for the parts, 255 pounds for shipping ! and that was the cheapest we could get

Well it will need a fair bit of work and as Chris says there will be rust......But the ie engine is not such a bad thing (I am going that route with one of my Sprints!)

I guess there is a good sign. Another sprint available. It's MK1 1980 webber boxer engine.
Images as below.

Engine still running. Is this the original engine?
That is an earlier Sprint and some say better looking. It has original steel wheels and the engine is probably original but you would need to check the ID numbers.

As Phil says

95 bhp engine though , single carb.

I think you might have even more issues with rust with this one though.

The only downside to this one is the inboard brakes and the engine isn't as exciting as the later S2 and S3 105bhp engines with twin carbs.

Are these the only ones you can find ?

Since you made up your mind about getting a Sprint, I'd sit tight until a good one comes up :)

Personally, after owning several Sprints and currently 2, I would go for an S3 with either the 1.5 or 1.7 engine.

That one will bring out the most smiles per mile, less expenses if it's been dry stored, and easier to find parts as its interchangeable with 33's ;)

There is another unit well keep and wanted to sell at higher price.

I would say this is the best, that I do not need to restore.

But I would miss is the restoration journey.

Go for this one :)
The money you will save from treating the tin worm, you can spend on modifying this one, lower suspension, zender kit, wheels, interior ;)

I'll catch you all later.
Good luck with your project, and don't worry, you'll never miss a restoration process with an old Alfa ;)
