Hi there,

My Alfa Romeo 156 TS 2.0 2000 Selespeed requires the timing belt to be changed
.
So wanted to know what exactly does it requires, i was just assuming that it requires just the belt and it would do, but the shopkeeper said it requires a complete timing belt kit, which includes the timing belt, the tensioner adjuster, the idler bearing and the balance belt kit

So could some of you genius explain what exactly is the requirement and if can it be done at home?

On a 2.0l you need to change main timing belt with tensioner and idler.
also balance belt with tensioner.
you could also get variator replaced if its getting noisey on tick over

its £83.95 for cam belt kit (required) , £65.55 for balance kit (required) , £95.00 for variator (optional)

for fitting you will require cam locking tools also sold on here for £40.00 and here is a guide of the process but im not a mechanic i would not say its easy DIY but a mechanic might disagree and i dont touch mine myself i have a mate who does my car

If you have a good socket set range, jack, axle stands, the cam locking tool (locking tools are a must) and the above belt kits and you have worked on engines before then its a days work for a novice taking your time.
Dont let anyone near your car if they say that you dont need locking tools tipex will do...

a good mechanic would have this job done is less than 2 hours,a toy town mechanic half a day and a novice really taking there time maybe 4 hours

Basically I would advise getting a specialist to do this job. It needs to be done properly and carefully, anything less may result in disaster.
