Just bought a 147 today for the princely sum of £900, the cars nice and was obviously well looked after, but when I got home and started looking through receipts I was horrified (and happy) at some of the prices.

The one that sticks in my mind and throat is an exhaust system for almost the same price as I paid for the car from 2 years ago.

Im a VW man and know main dealers are expensive but even VW arent that expensive for a 1.6 litre exhaust.

Hope that you never blow your cat as that will be nearly double what you paid!
Welcome to alfa main dealer hell! Best thing you can do is find a reliable and honest independent alfa dealer.

Us Maserati owners turn to Alfa Romeo as a cheap source of parts. The hydraulic pump on the Selespeed gearbox, for example, is a quarter the price from an Alfa dealer as from a Maser dealer; it's the same part.

For a car that age find a specialist and supply your own parts.
I service my GTV for a fraction and will do so with my 159 once warranty is gone.

Look on the net closely before you buy: I just recently bought a set of 19 inch multispok TI rims for my 159. Price of the main dealer: 550 € per rim. I bought the set for 900 on the net and the main dealer confirmed that it is genuine Alfa parts.

You've bought yourself an Alfa Romeo. VW is Volkswagen, which means "people's car", i.e. cheap. Alfa is rather upmarket, so more expensive. Cheap acquisition does not mean cheap maintenance in this case.
As far as 1.6 exhaust goes, find something aftermaket - the original sitcks up there as cow's udders. Go for something that can hide under the bumper.

The cost of routine maintenance drives the price of perfectly serviceable cars downwards because many people do not want to pay a large bill for a car that isn't worth much.

Finding a good local specialist is important and this site is brilliant for advice and ideas on how to do things.

Look for a recent cambelt receipt. Your service book might say the earlier of 6 years/72,000 miles but that interval was halved in 2004 or 2005. My local specialist charges about £200 to do a TS cambelt and variator but many garages will charge double.

I am not sure if the 1.6 litre is different since most 147 i see are JTD but aren't those original exhausts allways rusty and awful to look at?

This is a good opportunity to get a nice looking exhaust.
You might check out alfisti. I got some good experience with them.

At the weekend I was quoted over £5 for one M10 Nut (special thread) by a dealer! The exact same part on Ebay is less than 50p - Rip off!

Had a bit of a surprise when pricing up two front springs for my Brera after MOT failure.
Apparently, only available from dealer at £132 each.
Full set of Eibach Prokit springs (four) £200 on Ebay or £160 from German supplier.
Problem is, two to three week wait.

Try £45 for an injector seal from Renault! That was just for one!
I got all 4 from eBay for £4 and sorted the wife's car in less than an hour. Renault wanted to remove the injector, send it to be tested and cleaned plus about a thousand other things, I dread to think what the bill would have been...

Yep it's funny. I wanted to transform my lusso 150 to a Ti:
The Springs are only available together with the Ti dampers (less then 20k miles - why would i want new dampers). The Ti Rims they quoted were € 550 EACH!
I ended up with eibachs and bought the rims for € 900 for the whole set of four. The dealer who quoted them for 550 each confirmed them as original parts and could not believe how cheap they were.

I will take the original sideskirts though because aftermarket look different and have quite flexible plastic compared to the original ones.

My conclusion: The dealerships most likely don't earn much with selling cars but the prices for parts are outrageous.
