Couldnt really find anything in the search function apart from crunchy gear changes my problem is alot different. The first and second gear have always been a bit tight and have never really gotten better after the second year of ownership. Tonight on the drive home 2nd gear kept popping out when i hit about 3k rpm it got worse and worse and it will go into gear but pop out straight away when rev'd. I am taking it to the dealer on thursday but i would like to know if driving the car normally but going from 1st gear to 3rd will damage the car further? I have been going from 1st to 3rd tonight but being very carefull and judging the rpms so the engine does not struggle etc anyone else had the same failure??

I'm sure the mito 155TB, has the M32 gearbox; which is used on alot of hothatches. Abarth Grande punto, corsa/astra vxr. If you put M32 gearbox problems in google, u'll see the same issues across manufactors. My old Grande punto 1.9mjet had same box and it felt the same and was crunchy into 1st/2nd and generally quite notchy throughout the box.

Had a look and it looks like the m32 is a gm gearbox and used in alot of cars i still can not find anything similiar to my problem i have just lost second gear completely! It will go in second gear but will not engage and it makes a horrid crunchy noise!!!!!!! Only have to wait till thursday now i just hope the gearbox is in warranty!

That sounds very similar to the issue we had with the Alfasud we used to compete in. I know its a differant 'box completely, but principle is the same. Ours came out and went off to a transmission specialist. Gearboxes are witchcraft, revs go in one end and come out differant tother end. Tis black arts I tell thee. I'd have thought your warranty will cover it.

I would be very interested in the outcome of this. After a recent test drive in a A500 which has the Alfa 147 gearbox - the gearbox was whining and it only had 21K miles on the clock. Felt that it had been TMCd and it had a life in the 'fast lane'. When I looked at the Mito 155TB I was glad that it was getting the stronger gearbox capable of higher torque and also surprised on how smooth the gearbox is given the criticisms in reviews of the GPA. I wonder if your gearbox is just a 'once off'. Would agree with the previous poster that it should be covered under warranty even in the 3rd year.

yep it should be under warranty i do drive fast on the odd occasion but i do not sit on the clutch and try and look after my drivetrain when driving. Second gear has always been funny even more so when trying to change quickly up to 2nd from 1st. From what i have read the gearbox does not like high torque figures but the 155 engine has 170 torques and while that is respectable it is not gearbox unfriendly? This is the first major fault i have had with the car since i got it and has proven to be my most reliable car i have owned starting first time every morning and getting me to work on the bad winters we had while other people struggled. Lets hope the dealers can be as good as the car has been:confused:

I would need to check the figures for the Mito 155TB and the M32 gearbox but I reckon that the engine produces 230Nm and the gearbox could be rated between 280Nm-350Nm. So it is easily within spec. On the A500 (uses exact same turbo) engaging Sport mode (similar to going from Normal to Dynamic mode) getting raises the torque from 201Nm to 230Nm which is well past the gearbox rated figures of 206Nm. I have only seen one 'documented' example of their gearboxes needing replacement. I would guess that you have been unlucky or you have been unsympathetic in going into 2nd from first. I have noticed that 2nd can be a lttle 'cruchy' unless you take your time but I'll only a newbie. Good luck with the dealer and keep us posted.

I will admit i have messed up second on the odd occasion when driving fast but it never happened in any other car i have owned so i put it down to the cars notchy gearbox and from what i have read 1st and 2nd gear are known for being notchy, sticky, crunchy etc etc I do drive in d mode all the time mainly because i get better mpg in d mode due to the throttle response i find i can get up to speed more easy. N mode you have to mash your foot flat down to get anywhere! It has got me wondering is it my fault? driving in d mode and occasionally mashing second might have caused this fault?

These things happen and I remember on the GPS the cables/linkages use to be prone to freeze in the colder weather and people would be more forcefall when selecting gears, which lead to problems or loosing a gear.

Hopefully you'll be back up and running soon. Most remapped GPS use to output over 320-330nm of torque and didn't suffer gearbox problems or they werent reported much?! Though I had problems with dual mass flywheel not being able to cope with this amount of torque.

Hi there, my car is currently in ALFA in Perth Scotland. it had a constant whine off the the front, i initially put it in believing there was something wrong with the front diff, turned out that the whole gearbox was buggered and it needs a new 1. GEARBOX AND DIFF. Western have been superb.

I was told that the warranty team wanted pictures of the complete gearbox to see what the problem was. the dealer told me that they have came accross 4 of these and its all been the same problem POOR FITTING AND MANUFACTURING AT THE FACTORY. Get it back asap and don't settle for anything less than a new gearbox.

Oh and by the way i have a 155 TB VELOCE, Had it since new (18 months) its done 15000.

Just heard from the dealers apparantly they have not got the parts to fix the gearbox and have got to get permission/clarification etc to fit a new gearbox! Dont know what that meant exactly all i understood from the conversation is that the new gearbox has to come from italy so it will be about a week before the car can be fixed. So far so good but they did not give me an explanation on why it broke but at least i am getting a brand new gearbox which is always good news unless the new one decides to break at 11k miles:lol: Customer service wise the dealership is doing well.... They had no courtesy cars but gave me a lift to work and the driver was nice and chatty, i had to ring them to find out what fault my gearbox had they probally would have rang me but i dropped the car off at 8.15 am and had not heard anything by 1.30 pm so i rang them! Got to admit i feel alot better about getting a new gearbox than to getting it repaired hopefully the new box might go into 1st and second a bit smoother? we shall see:p

To be fair with the radio off and the windows up i could always here the transmission it wasnt over loud or whiny but it was noticable? I just put it down to being an alfa and thought nothing of it but it was probally a sign of things to come!!! I will know what to listen out for now and hopefully everything will be ok!

i would advise you to get bridgestones or similar harder compound tyres unless you like changing tyres a lot

Is this gearbox the same one used in MiTo QV & some Giulietta's? Those models have also had problems with noisy gearboxes & trouble selecting lower gears.

Actually my gearbox had to be taken out and repaired around Christmas time. It was making a quiet but high pitched spinning whining noise which got faster and louder the faster you went (no not the turbo, it sounded a bit like a milk float ). I lived with it for a couple of months but it definitely was beginning to sound louder so I took it in thinking it was just a wheel bearing or something.

It turned out to be the 1st motion shaft bearing, and because mine was the rarer TB155 I had to wait while they got parts from Italy. After going stircrazy in an i20 for a fortnight over the Christmas period it was such a relief to get my Bella back - never have I missed my car so much. Anyway, they fixed it all up right, I got it back and its all as good as new now, if not a little freer in action changing gear. I remember before 1st + 2nd could be a bit clunky and harsh, but they seem to have fixed that too. :)

I really think i should have taken my car in sooner as the noise you described is what i always heard? It was a milk floaty noise but was not intrusive and was drowned out by the heater on full or the radio on so i really did not take much notice... wish i had now:cry: And yes they do not have the parts for the older 155tb mito so the parts or in my case the gearbox have to come from italy! I think my gearbox was one of the many that was poorly fitted or put together etc

Crickey m8, I'm even more glad I got it looked at when I did then (sounds like it is the same fault with the gearbox, from the same batch of TB155s probably). You'll love it when you get it back all fixed up, after that all you'll hear is that deep-sounding burbling exhaust and Grrrrr of the engine again, I just hope it doesn't take too long buddy! ;)
