Hi,

I wondered if anyone knew this, but when I accelerate from 70 to 80 on the motorway I am told by my work collegues that there is a burst of blue smoke exiting the exhaust that is very visable. Anyone else had this problem? I was wondering if this is the start of the EGR valve failing or the MAF?

Cheers

:)

Sure it's blue and not black? The JTD with a standard map on normal pump fuel can be a bit smokey. ( I assume you have jtd due to EGR) There will be a bit of oil in the turbo pipes too so could just be sucking a bit when you give it the beans. Oil in there is alos quite normal.

I have checked and its definately black smoke? Any ideas? And yes its the JTD 1.9 engine
Ah so black not blue. perfectly normal then. If it is chucking out lots then try running some injector cleaner and check for small leaks in the lower turbo hose as they fail first. Running super diesel actually pretty much cures any black smoke at all from these engines. Have been using it for years and it works out about the same in cost due to improved mpg

i agree with all joss said.............egr sticking will cause the car to bog down when setting off, then dump a smoke screen
did it do it repeatedly of just the once?

ooooh chaning air filter wont go amiss..........and is the car water temp running at 90 degrees........!!!

It had its 84k service at Mangoletsi a few months back, which included new air filter, fuel filter and oil etc. The Cam belt has been done and the water pump. When I start it up in the morning there is a slight judder with the revs and then it goes normal, also it smokes a bit too. Driving wise it goes up and down the motorway for 100 miles each day and there doesnt seem to be any lack of performance or MPG as I am still getting 48!

I will check the air filter and hoses etc at the weekend and report back. It had a service 6k ago and the temp is sitting at 90 degrees.

Cheers

Crap diesel! Mine's the same ,if i put supermarket cheap stuff in it smokes like a train when flooring it.
But if i put bp ultimate or shell v its as good as gold.
I do put injector cleaner through every now and then and you would be surprised how much smoke i lay down then!!!

Don't want smoke?

Don't buy a diesel!

All diesel's smoke & kick out black plumes on acceleration even when brand new.

Obviously excessive smoke means there is an underlying issue that needs addressing but as long as the car returns the MPG, passes the emissions and performs properly why worry.:(

I just can't help thinking it's a rather pointless exercise, spending an absolute fortune trying to rectify an issue that you will never eliminate.....
I mean, why did you buy a diesel in the first place... To save money, right? ;) So why loose what you have gained chasing the black smoke ghost.... Go and buy a petrol model and be done with it:thumbs:

Hi guys,

I think I have found the problem. I began checking the hoses and couldnt find any tears so I called the RAC out. The bloke found the problem straight away. I top inlet manifold that the MAF and EGR plus/bolts to is clogged with diesel soot. Its booked in Monday to the local garage to clean it all up. If this sorts it, thats the fix to all your black smoke worries :)

Ok it now in the garage and booked in. Its having new Swirl values, a new inlet manifold and a new EGR valve and all the gaskets that go with it all. The local Saab specialist is doing it in Bath for £800. When I get it back I report the results

mine is similar mileage as yours -but no smoke. Interested to know why you think the manifold is blocked anymore than normal?

if you think its the egr ....why not just change that and see if it fixes. Spending £800 on all of it is a bit of blanket approach IMO. You can see if its the egr by blanking it off with a £3 plate ....then go and buy a new egr if it is.

Just a thought....
