I took mine out on my 147, pretty much the same as the GT, PITA of a job, but I did mine when I did the inlet manifold so I could refurb it so I got it out the top of the engine bay.

Looking at the space available I would say normally it would have to come out the bottom way, might involve removing the O/S drive shaft, but if not it will be a tight squeeze.

Sure someone will come along who has done it without half the engine already out.

Ok thanks for the info, also heard the engine mounts can be undone to allow it to tilt slightly, hopefully I can do struggle through and save garage fees :/

I had my local Alfa specialist do mine when the bearing started getting very noisy on it a couple of months ago. Got a used alternator for £30 but the labour was about £150 or something. The engine has to be tilted forward on the front two mounts but you have to undo the manifold first. Apparently not hard but very time consuming. If you have the tools and space to do it yourself it'll save you a lot of cash. Good luck. Simon.
