Hi All,

I'm hoping someone can help a concerned/panicked new member!

I'm on my second Alfa, I had a 1.6 147 from March 2007 to Dec 2010 and I now have a GT 1.9 JTDM which I picked up in March 2011. She's been well behaved so far, until now...

I was driving myself home on Sunday night, was nearly home, turned into a road in 2nd gear, attempted to move into 3rd and could not do so. I pulled over, thinking it was the car mat which has a tendency to get in the way, but with the engine running I could not fully depress my clutch in order to put her into 1st.

I turned the car off, left it for a minute or two, tried again, managed to get her into 1st and get myself home. However I had the same issues outside my house trying to get her into the driveway.

I spoke to a some Alfa garages/specialists the past couple of days. Answers range from new clutch kit, master cylinder, slave cylinder, release bearing, clutch fluid, flywheel.

Last night, when switched off, I could move the gears through the gearbox, but I could not do so when she was wtiched on. There is some sort of "resistance" when I try to push the clutch down, and I can't get it to go all the way. At the furthest point it goes, if I try to put the car into gear, no can do!

I have read some other threads, and seen the various opinions. I should point out that I felt the clutch was heavy when I test drove the car, compared to my 147, but not especially when compared with the other GT I test drove. She's done just short of 55,000 miles and
until Sunday night, I had no niggly issues with the clutch or gearbox at all.

Any thoughts???

Thanks!

The clutch release bearing inside the gearbox has broken up 100%. Probably needs a new dual mass flywheel too.

Does sound like release bearing to me, I do see it quite often. You should only need a new clutch and really shouldn't need a dual mass at that mileage - feel free to give me a call for any advice.

Cheers

Thanks everyone

Just for an update, the AA looked at the car on Sunday, confirmed that the clutch is done for, so now looking around for a competitive quote for a clutch replacement.

Hi All,

I gave my car to ProAlfa in Watford, never used them before. Unfortunately, the diagnosis was not just a new clutch kit, but a new dual mass flywheel as well, setting me back, with the labour, over £900!! Just what I don't need at this time of year!!

:( Welcome to the forum.
£900 is not really what you need :( Cars you just can't live with them and can't live without them.
