Hi,

I'm new to the forum having just purchased an Alfa 159 (56 Plate).

I'm going to be doing an oil change tomorrow but after trawling the internet and searching forum I can't find a decisive answer / picture to where the oil filter is located.

I know it's a cartridge type but I can not see anything from the top of the engine bay.

Any help would be appreciated. :)

left rear corner, under the aux belts, sort of pointing diagonally towards the door hinge. you can get at it from above as theres room to get your hand in but it will drop oil all over the tray and driveshaft if you do it from above without putting paper or plastic under it top catch the mess. need to get the tray off to take the plug out anyway. And get a spare drain plug...and a torx bit and a hammer...you'll understand if/ when it rounds off!.
I got some of those gaitor grip type strap wrenches as theres no small hex to take the cap off on mine and i couldnt find an alfa tool to do the job.
take the engine cover off and silicone grease the bobbins while you're at it (after you've greased the door seals )

Best to get at it from under the drivers wheel arch, there is a special tool available to undo it but I used a strap wrench, be carefull as the housing is plastic, there is a sort of bleed screw on the bottom, put a piece of garden hose about a foot long onto it and into your oil drain container befor you undo it, after a turn or so of the housing the oil in the filter housing will drain out through the hose, well some of it will, the rest will go down your arm, over the floor or all over the driveshaft and suspension so have a few rags to hand before you start.

I cant understand why they are using these cartridge filters, what was wrong with the spin on filter, except they cost about 5p more.

With the sump drain bolt use a good condition ring spanner, dont attempt it with an open ender, it will round and is a good idea to have a spare, they are the same as vauxhall and saab and about £5 on ebay.

Cheers guys.

I'm hoping not to remove the sump plug as I have one of those oil suction devices which extracts the oil through the dipstick tube.

If I can access it through the driverside wheel it will be easier but worst case I'll drop the undertray.

To do an oil change i bought a vaccuum extractor from e-bay, just pop the hose down the dip stick tube pump it up and hey presto the oil comes up the pipe from the sump and into the storage bottle. You also get af unnel that is used to pour the old oil into a disposal vessel.

No more wrestling under the car trying to undo a drain plug.

I got this tip from the guy next door who works for the AA.
