Hi,
My 159 is due for it's cambelt replacement and I just wanted to ask people if they know more about this. My brother used to work at a Fiat/Alfa dealer and told me stories of how they would spend hours removing the engine of a Fiat coupe to replace things to waste time and make big money when this could supposedly be done a faster and cheaper way.
Does the engine have to come out and it cost over £600 to replace the cambelt and water pump on a 159 2.4 JTDm?!
Cheers guys and gals.

Hi
Before I settled on my current 2.4 159 I looked at a 1.9 that was due for a cambelt change. I found an Alfa specialist in Pershore through the web who I called and he quoted me a price of around £350 which included replacing the water heater as well. I cannot believe that you are going to have to pay anywhere near £600. Shop around !

I have already shopped around although nobody has come near to that price so far. I'd naturally love to save myself that much money if I can. Who did you get that quote from?

Try an independent - I had a couple of coupe 20vt's, fiat booked the cambelt change at 15 hours and charged accordingly. I knew a fiat head mechanic - He could do the job in around 4 hours but the garage still billed at 15 hours!

There were plenty of companies in England offering 20vt changes including all tenioners, water pump and ancillary belts for around £300 -£350, they had done that many that they had time down to less than 3 hours. Not sure wher you are but a couple that spring to mind are powerfiat in basildon and motormech in birmingham.

Not sure what is involved in the 90k mile service above the belt change - Alfa Workshop (Jamie Porter) has full service listed here at £550 -

I contacted the specialist in Pershore and the quote was much the same as every other that i've had so far. They all come up around the £600 mark. I've contacted Veloces, Autolusso, Alfa workshop, alfa dealers, JJB motors etc etc. They all come up about the same so I guess that's the price i'm looking at.
Cheers for the help guys. If anyone comes across any great deals for this then let me know!!!!

One other thing, the service guy at the dealer where I am having my Cambelt swapped next month, 13,000 earlier than Alfa says, says he has heard of few problems with 2.4 cambelts and that it shouldn't be a problem if the car were remapped before the swap. What do people out there think of this?

Make sure you change the waterpump at the same time as the belt/tensioners etc. The pump is only about £60 and there is not much additional labour involved in doing this. Take a look at the sticky thread in the 147/156/GT lounge - you don't want the pump to pack up later...........

I've spoken to the guy at NJS and it's not £219. JTD is very vague and the £219 could be the old 1.9 or 2.4 JTD engines and not the new JTDm engines? Thank you for trying though.
