Hi Guys,
RH Steering Rack boot is split. Would like to replace it over next couple days. Are typical Universal rack boots suitable? In NZ it is usually expensive to get any OEM Alfa parts so if the universal version is going to be ok then that will be what i go for. Local parts shop (like halfords) don't list many Alfa parts so most often need to go genuine
Cheers

You will need to check the length and diameter but no reason that you can't use a universal that I can think off apart from the wrong size fouling on something else as far as I'm aware they are there to keep the grease in and dirt out!

Try your local independant Alfa/euro parts supplier. A proper aftermarket (not genuine Alfa, but identical) boot might only be $20 - $30. Not really worth trying to find a universal one that will work if that's the case.

If you don't have any luck in Chch, try Italian Autos in Auckland or Parts Plus in Wgtn 04 471 2755 - Mike there has new 156 headlamps for $140 at the mo so I can't believe a simple rack boot will be very pricey.

No universal rack boots will fit. They are all too short. I have been through all this already with my 156. You need to order some off ebay. All NZ Suppliers want over $100 for a pair. They can be had on ebay for around $40 NZ landed.

Thanks Guys,

I've done some looking today as well:

Cockrams in Chch. Genuine $163+, but they can fit some form of universal they have for $20+. May be a bit case by case so I don't quite have confidence the universal one they are referring too will actually fit in this instance. If I can't find better I'll go and check it out.

Waiting on North Island supplier now for a quote.

Repco Universal ones RRB0002 look like they won't achieve 61mm diameter (probably around 50mm). The length when in it's natural state was about 120mm. Had to stretch quite hard to get to 210mm.

Italian Autos $99+GST Pair
Parts Plus $65+GST each

As usual I'll make sure I update this post with whatever I do.

Cheers

this is the one I got http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ALFA-147-156-STEERING-RACK-GAITOR-BOOTS-NEW-X-2-EXACT-/330423086948?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4ceec02f64

i spent a day hunting around various suppliers in Auckland looking for a proper boot that would fit. The universals i found were all too short and even if you can find one long enough the chances are it will be very difficult to fit on the steering rack end of the passengers side as there is no room for fingers. The proper ones just slot right on.

BNT only have the short universal boots. Also tried a steering rack specialist and they didin't have anything that would fit.

Best bet is ebay or OEM. Will save alot of time and headache when fitting.

Just purchased a Kit (2 of with clips) for NZ$45 landed from Ebay.

Used Firstlines website to confirm it was the right part:
First Line – The All Makes Specialist

Also came across Micks Grage which has a great website and great prices. Have previously used Alfa workshop but found Micks garage was about 30% cheaper when i set up a basket with rack boots, cv boots, and shipping to nz.

Thanks for all your help and discussion.
