hi i have a 156 selespeed it has started clunking into 1st gear and makes noises on tick over i had it checked out at the local garage but i don't think there up to speed with it , also the hydraulic level is on the lower mark on the dipstick i do not know if this has anything to do with it , also the oil is down as dexron III and is yellow in colour but the only dexron i can find is red.
the garage i took the car to said to run it till it went then take it to a specialist as there was a problem with the gearbox but there is no problem when it changes gear.
many thanks
tony.

Either buy the fiatecuscan programme and an ELM327 reader and re calibrate your sele system, or find someone who can do it for you. its a useful bit of kit and enables you to make all sorts of tests and adjustments on the gearbox actuator. I do mine once a month and keep the clutch free play adjusted and i've had no real problems. Clunking into gear and harsh gear changes are often just the actuator out of sink. The oil is most probably sele oil, which is expensive. I drained mine nearly a year ago and replaced it with standard Dextron 3 ATF, with no problems. I'm unsure whether sele oil and ATF will mix, i'd say not. Top it up with sele oil and keep an eye on the level to rule out a leak (don't overfill as the oil will be chucked out the over flow and give a false leak).

The trouble with non alfa workshops is they don't understand the sele system and won't work on it, or guarantee work carried out if they do.

I thinks it's best to try to sort out any issues with the sele gearbox before it goes wrong. I have had them working fine then quickly go into tow truck mode, leaving you stranded.

sele warning light

I've got a 2000 156 sele with the gearbox warning light coming on, it was low on fluid so I topped it up and it is working perfectly, will the fiatecuscan and the reader be able to clear the light or is there likely to be another problem, there is no decent stealer or indie anywhere near me here so any help would be great, there doesnt appear to be anything wrong it works fine off the wheel, the stick and in city, its just very annoying on my wife's 40 minute commute to have the buzzer and light going off every minute.

thanks

Steve, there will be another issue (unless it has lost most of the fluid already!).
The system doesn't monitor fluid levels, so low level in itself will not have put the light on.
FiatECUScan should give you a clue as to the cause though.

thanks David

I have to say it was pretty low so maybe that was all(fingers crossed)

as to the ELM327 unit, do I need an adapter for it or will the one supplied fit, sorry to be a pain but mechanically I have a fair idea of what happens but when electrics are involved I'm not so sure. I take it I plug the ELM into the socket under the steering wheel and let it do its stuff then plug it into the laptop with the fiatECUscan loaded onto it?

many thanks

The selespeed side should really use any oil so you may have a leak somewhere either internal/external - keep an eye on the fluid

As for the cable since you have a 156 of that age just use a vw kkl Cable and yes its just plugs into your laptop and into the socket in the fuse box at drivers knees.

You may have to re-configure your com ports to make it work
