Hi Everyone,

I just recently joined this forum earlier today so please forgive me if I am not following all the usual forum protocols at present.

The reason for my message posting is that I just recently purchased an Alfa Romeo 156 1.9 JTD 16v Veloce 2004 Reg and already upon my purchase I have 2x warning lights come on only a few days into the purchase showing on the display unit stating ABS System Failure & VDC System Failure - Return to Dealer ?

Also my Partner wasn't very happy with me purchasing an Alfa Romeo as she wanted me to get a German Car i.e.) Audi / Merc / VW etc... - She prefers Audi's as she says more reliable but I wanted something different to everyone else - Hope I don't live to regret it now !

Hence, I have at present parked the car for the time being and wanted to ask everyone firstly if anyone knew of any decent (but reasonably priced ! ) independent Alfa Specialist Garages in the South East Area but more specifically in the West London / Middlesex Area as I'm based in Ashford Middlesex and secondly has anyone experienced a fault like this (ABS issue mentioned above) and is it something that is a known common fault with 156's since when I test drove the car for about 20 mins on the main roads, it never showed up then, hence I am very surprised for it to happen this soon after my purchase of the car ?

Therefore, any help, advice or guidance on this matter would be very greatly appreciated and received and may help save my relationship with my partner as I'm in the dog house at the moment !!!

Thanks ! :depressed:

First - welcome.....

Is your speedometer still working? The speedo is activated from the ABS sensors, so if it isn't working then you may have a problem with an ABS sensor......if it is working, then its probably another glitch - could possibly be a weak battery - these throw up all sorts of silly "error" messages - though admittedly more on a 147 than a 156.

Strictly speaking you'll need to get someone to plug in a diagnostic reader to identify which (if any) sensor is faulty.

Can't help with a local independent (I'm way oop North) but this post should bump your post up so hopefully someone from your neck of the woods will see it!

I don't know the west London specialists being over in the east, but you could drive it up to Autolusso from there quite easily?, they will give you straight forward advice (I'm not connected but used them once). The problem you describe says brake light switch to me since it happened on the same model 04 car at around 90k miles, it costs around £15 and is easily fitted by hand behind the brake pedal. Search the forum or google and you will find the part and discussion. Driving with the warning light on in this case means that you do not have any abs or vdc.
