Greetings from sunny Montenegro.

I am owner of 147 1.9 JTD 2005 85 kw. I have a whining noise coming from gearbox or differential that is most noticeable in 3rd gear around 1500 rpm until 2000 rpm. This is also the case in 4th gear at even lower rpm (around 1200). Other gears no noise. And only when holding constant throttle. As soon as I put more power in the whine is gone. What can be the cause?

My turbo has a little play. I touched it and I can move it a bit. It is ready to be fixed. But why then I can hear that sound (sound is not like turbo whine) in these gears only. Why not in 1st,2nd and 5th?

Try to change gearbox oil then you will see is there some metal pieces in it. Its not expensive and its easy to do

I've done that. No metal pieces in it. And no change to the sound. I don't know if it is possible but my opinion is that the engine or most likely gearbox mount is gone and gearbox itself is sitting a bit low and pressing on the axle. Strange thing is that it is only noticeable in 3rd and 4th at low revs. My mechanic has no clue what it can be,and we don't have quality mechanics in Montenegro,that is the problem.

If mounting are worn and gearbox fall to axle there must be a mark on axle.
