When my car is ticking over it sounds like diesel, when cold it's really bad and quiets down when heats up. Somebody told me it was to do with a valve that has to be changed when doing the clutch. Is this true and is it expensive. Also what does pinking mean.

It sounds like the VARIATOR is knackered, gets changed in line with the cambelt - perhaps a £300 job on a 1.6, but due every 36 months or 36 thousand miles.

If youre near G66 I'll confirm it for you.

Pinking - its detonation caused by mis-timing of the spark causing combustion at the wrong time. The car has a knock sensor to pick this up and alter the ignition advance dwell angle accordingly, so it shouldnt be happening.

parts to do timing/aux belt + tensioners + variator & seal + cam cover gasket + water pump [ also recommended to repalce ] will cost the bones of £300.
