Hi Guys,

I'm in the process of acquiring a 2008 plate 1.9 JTDm Sport Wagon. I've noticed that the recommended interval for the Cambelt/pump seems to be around 90Kish. I was operating on the theory of about 65Kish to be safe. The car has just over 35K on the clock. However a brief scan of the web seems to intimate horror stories from journalists about needing to change at 40K and exploding pumps. Is this a hold over from the 156 based 1.9 JTDm's and is 'perceived' knowledge or do I need to be concerned that I have a time bomb ticking under my bonnet.......

Case in point Jason Dawes reviews the car on his website pointing out issues with the 1.9 and then a few paragraphs later recomends it the very same engine? Confused am I.

A quick search seems to show them being done anywhere from 60ish to 70ish.

No need to be confused - the 1.9 JTD 16v engines are the same in all Alfas (147,156,GT,159), it's just the ECU/fuelling is different on the JTDm (the small 'm' stands for modificata) from the earlier pre-2006 JTD Multijet. They all have the same waterpump - it's even the same pump found on the 2.4 JTD 20v (156, 159, Brera and 946 Spider).

Sensible view is to change cambelt/tensioner/idle bearing/waterpump at 48,000 miles or 4years (age is just as important as mileage). The bearings in the pump can seize, stripping the belt. The 90,000 miles change is only there to haul in fleet sales - a very dubious interval that has resulted in lots of failures.

Hope that helps.

Same engine with the same pump and same belt....

Most of the specialists are well up on the issue by now though and it isn't a total disaster if the pump does let go, but obviously better to avoid the failure!

Not quite the same belt David. The earlier JTD 16v multijet CF3 engines have 198 teeth on the belt (part number 46791189), the later CF4 engines have 199 teeth (part number 55183528). Some people have been caught out by this, and ordered the wrong
belt.

Hi.

I have a 07 159 1.9 SW. Has only done 30k, but hasn't had the cambaelt changed etc. Alfatune did the service last July (had them do the egr/dpf magic on it 6 month previous) and didn't mention that i would need to be thinking aobut getting this work done. Should i be worried that it's about to go? does anyne know ab out how much this will cost so i can get saving up if i need to!

Cheers.
