A quick question on the assembled group's view on whether Aircon in a GT is "good" or "poor". OK I know it's 33C outside today and most cars will struggle to cool the interior of a vehicle that's been sat in direct sunlight all day and thinks it's 45C according to the dash.

But I've had cars in the past where even in conditions like this you start the car and run it for 5-10 mins with aircon on full blast and then you can get in to blissful "refridgerator" of coolness and go on your way. The aircon in my GT just doesn't seem to have the same cooling ability, at best it manages to make things "almost comfortable".

I've topped up the refridgerant (which did improve things) and I'm not saying it isn't giving out cold air, but it just doesn't feel properly cold to me - I've had cars where it's like an arctic wind, I'd say mine is more cool breeze, if that makes any sense.

Appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks

Sounds like you need the system checking air con compressor and the temp controls.
Did you get it done professionally or top it up yourself ?

Adjust the flow only to your front (not and legs) and press the button for circulation of the air inside i.e. not all the time to take air from outside and send it to the cabin.

The vent temp is decent, but the amount of air the fans move, and the tiny vents mean Alfa AC is woeful. Compare it to any Mercedes and its obvious.

Even with 4degrees C at the vents, my 156 can't contain, let alone reduce interior temps over 25 degrees outside.

The only time it manages is if I start out early with the car interior cool, and have the AC on LO all the time. Get in a hot car thats been sitting in the sun all day and after 1pm with heavy black leather seats I'm sweating through my clothes in minutes.

My experience of the GT air con is the same, had a leak repaired and had it gassed and checked over by an air con specialist, and in the recent weather it has been hopeless against the heat.

It is working, I can feel it working at the vents, however it just feels terribly insufficient :(

Mine works fine. On getting into a hot car, drive with the windows open and recirculation off for a mile or so to get it to ambient temperature, then close the windows and put the recirc on. Lovely.

Had my GT's air con/climate control re-gassed 10 days ago and it was working fine for about 2-3 days and then it started to pack up. No cold air and it sounded as though something was leaking. Got it booked in to be looked at again.

Annoying as my dads 54 plate 166 has very cold air from his and its almost too cold I'm told!

That just shows that the system just isn't very good.
I'm sure yours is working as well as any other GT/147/156 does, but lets face it, it isn't great!

A good system will cool a hot car down with the windows shut and no need for recirc.

Mine will do that but it just takes a bit longer. The method I use for this sort of weather was taught me by my Aus mates.
(BTW, my GT is much better than my 928 was!)

Agreed. The air con in my 18 year old Volvo works much better and thats constantly cycling as it needs regassing. Still, I'm guessing there is an incentive for manufacturers to fit a weak air-con that doesn't hammer economy too much!

Realistically the most you can expect any aircon system to do is to drop the inside to outside temperature by about ten to fifteen degrees. Even the split systems we have out here that don't bring in any outside air can't manage more than that. Its currently 44.8 outside (in the shade) and its 27 in the office (thats with three 1200watt units going flat out!).

... and add it to that a black color car, with dark interior and glass windows all around. We should not expect miracles.

... now i have in mind the test to Skoda Yeti in Top Gear :D :D :D

Thanks guys, I think it is as I suspected, it's just not quite man enough for the job.

I regassed it myself using a can of EZCool from Halfords, definitely improved things and was easy to do. But i did get it checked for free at Kwik Fit when I was having some tyres fitted and they confirmed it was fully charged and there were no leaks.

Take the point about closing other vents, that definitely helps when it's just me in the car, and there's a noticeable reducing in cooling when passengers are in with their vents open.

As I said, it's comfortable enough, and thankfully the outside temp has gone down to nearer normal now, so not really too bothered, just making sure it's fucntioning "within expected parameters" for an Alfa!

Thanks
