I hope some knowledgeable person can help.
I am using Alfa Diag on my 97 twinspark GTV. It can read Engine & ABS but when connected to the Airbag module it cannot find it. I have tried everything I can think of - all I want to do is remove the glowing Airbag light.
Is there a fuse in the circuit somewhere which may have blown?
After 3 months this is driving me nuts!!
Any Ideas- apart from Black tape & scrapping the car!!

Thanks in advance

Are you using a cable that has pin 3 connected to pin 7 and pin 1? Only FIAT/Alfa uses pin 3 for the airbag ECU (as far as I know) so a 'generic' OBD KKL cable, like the translucent-blue type sold for VAG-COM, will need the pin 1-3-7 modification done to it.

EDIT- oh, '97 model - that will be a three-pin connector, won't it? The note above applies only to the 16-pin OBD socket. For the three-pin connector, you'll first need to find the connector for the airbag ECU (and not the connector for the engine ECU). I don't know where that is, so you're back to doing the search that Rich suggested, sorry. EDIT again: this thread http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-gtv-and-916-spider/277621-phase-1-diagnostics-guide.html seems to be a good start. Note that you will still need the 1-3-7 wire modification in the OBD cable, as well as a three-pin adaptor as shown in that thread.

I think you can buy a modified cable for the phase 1's. You might look at the thread that explains how to open up the pins in the connectors, to tighten them. Also remember not to move the seats with the ignition on. B***** pain in the backside.

trust me, i have been looking at the threads for some time and have the correct cables , with the switches, checked the links under the seats but the problem is my cable will find the engine & ABS but not the airbag module. Tha is why I was asking for further help.is there a further fuse or would the module be dead?

The fuse for the airbag is shared with the CODE system. So if your car starts, that fuse is OK.

Have you been through the AlfaDiag FAQ? Especially "Q. Why does AlfaDiag disconnect or fail to connect to an ecu sometimes?"

AlfaDiag Alfa Romeo Diagnostic Software

Yes, I know you've said that it connects to the ABS & Engine ECUs OK. But they're both made by the same manufacturer ( Bosch ). The Airbag ECU is made by a different manufacturer ( TRW ). That may influence serial port timings.

PC configuration is where I'd start.

On ph 1's you must have the cable modification otherwise it won't see the airbag. I have the switchable cable but mine is a ph 2 and it works without the mod, ie: I just switch it to the airbag position, plug it in and the computer see's it straight away, but it's definitly not the same on ph 1's. There are some very good photos on the modifacation in some of the threads on here..
