Hi just thought i would pass this info on i have been driving with my airbag light on for some time now having had to pay a fiat garage to experiment at my cost to get the light out on the Car.
My good friend who owns a garage recently treated himself to a FIAT EXAMINER and we decided to set about the GTV well the problem was that my airbag unit was too old to be seen by the EXAMINER after a chat on the phone with a very helpful technician at CARSTINS called PETE he put us on the rite track as follows.

Connect examiner to three pin diagnostic under rear seat
Turn on ignition to mar
On the examiner menu make your way to Alfa 145
Then select 2 ltr 16V as engine option
Then select TRW2 airbag system
Tick the box to skip ISO reading the unit will then read the error codes and delete as required.
Hope this helps someone out as it may save some money if you go preloaded with the required info.
Thanks again to Pete at Carstins for this info.

I struggled to remove the air bag light from the silver GTV yesterday, I haven't got an examiner but have downloaded the latest copy of FiatECUscan to my note book.
Gonna have another go today!

Interesting, I just wonder is your airbag ECU the old Becker unit with the red connector?
as shown below.

No couldn't get it to work!

Can some 1 suggest a different programme for ph1?
Mine's the TRW unit as well (I don't think it's TRW2) and it just doesn't want to play nice. I tried AlfaOBD (you might like to try that too), at least that will connect to your hood ECU when you get bored.

I'm off to a FIAT specialist on Monday to try his SuperScan II tool.

Cheers mate.

Only thing is its for the GTV
Oh lol, I always associate you with the mint phase-1 Spider :)

Seriously though, get the number off the airbag ECU (about eight or nine digits starting with '606' I think) and do a search on this forum. If it's the troublesome one (60625181) you'll find results pretty quick (like mine at http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-gtv-and-916-spider/314390-spider-roof-ecu-connection-success.html and it seems no-one has managed to reset it. I think the best option next might be to buy another s/hand ECU of the more common type - or use FIAT Examiner as directed in this thread.

I believe so.:(

A blag that everyone is attempting to use is either take the bulb out or a bit of black tape behind covering airbag icon.

Just been down to have a look it is the "troublesome one" Al?
60652259 so not the same as mine, my '98 was probably made before yours as although mine was first registered December '98, it takes a long time for new cars to get to NZ :)

The airbag light has been part of our WOF test for about eight years so like you, I need to sort this out by the end of this month.

Try AlfaOBD on yours and I'll let you know how I get on.

I guess if they are not drawn to it by having it lit, as i said "Blag" ie: disguise as its a known issue so go to a non-alfa MOT station and hope they do not notice it!? If its lit they will notice, if its not they hopefully won't!?

is there a need for the airbag in the mot? do they just assume that because the light goes out it will activate? it says in the handbooks to replace after 10 years, i bet mine wasnt. in mine the light only started coming on after a real good soaking. now it goes off after about 15 minutes or so. i showed the mot man it was off when it went in and he didnt moan after it came back on ..... but he is a small garage who does a lot of work for me. Now the ABS light doesnt come on at all ... and i found out the hard way i dont have abs another story i guess

If i remember correctly.
If you were to put a mobile phone holder, sticker, air freshener.
The MOT man isn't allowed to remove any obstacle from its place.
Or is this on old wives tale.?
