air mass sensor , does any person in the alfa world know of a diy fix for the sensor , ie a removal of the actual sensor and some way of recon or cleaning it etc , or have i just lost the plot

You can try to clean it with an electronics cleaner spray but 9 out 10 cases it won't work. Replacement it's the only option. If money is an issue try aftermarket ones or from the brakers.

If it's dying, cleaning will only delay this at best.

When sourcing a new one (I wouldn't bother with a used one) - look for the sensor only, as the body is an expensive plastic tube...

The MAF in the GT JTDm is a sealed unit (well, mine is anyway) can't do anything with it, my old 156 1.8TS there were a couple of security bolts holding the sensor into the MAF body, it was possible to undo the bolts with a small plumber's wrench and give the sensor a clean with an alcohol based solvent. This is typically only ever a short term fix and you'll need to replace the MAF shortly.

MAFs are expensive so make sure that is your problem, disconnect the wiring plug and see if the car runs any better, if the MAF's at fault it should do, if it makes no difference... or is worse, then the problem is something else and you'll only be wasting money.
