Hi all,

I've had my alfa 147 for 3 years this summer and i've noticed that the air con isn't as cool as it used to be and there is also a slightly minging smell when you turn the air con on but it seems to go away after a short while running, but it isn't as ice cold as it used to be.

I was wondering if I should take it to be re-charged ?

I know that Kwik Fit charge £50 for this service, but should I take it to a dealer or Alfa specialist (normally visit Alfatune in St Helens for my servicing requirements).

Thanks in advance all, this is my first post.

No need to take it to a specialist garage, Kwik-fit can do it and your local Halfords will do it for around the same price too... although halfords offer a free air con cleaner with the re-charge which will probably clear up the bad smell.

I wouldn't bother with Halfords.
The way their website reads is that they just use the cans, which isn't good enough.

I've had a look and the Halfords product is just a can, will take it down to Gus at Alfatune first.

a proper aircon filling requires a special (expensive) tool like an Examiner, (just did that routine)
it sucks out oil and cooling liquid and then puts 15 bar pressure on the system for 30 minutes to see if there are leaks, then it vacumizes the system for another 30 minutes and waits another 15 minutes to see if the vacuum is maintained. Then the refill with oil and cooling fluid is done,
in modern sysyems like Alfa around 850 g of cooling fluid is needed.

gus may have a a/c engineer he uses but if your near wirral theres this guy 01516303872 or 07713638850,highly recommended by a mate in the trade
