I have just had an email from Euro car parts advertising air conditioning freshening and disinfection spray.

Basically it is sprayed into the air vents and it is meant to kill germs and viruses as well as freshen it up.

Does anyone here bother? I haven't up until now, all I do is make sure the pollen filter is replaced regularly.

I think a lot of garages skip the pollen filter change and this causes the smells. Most car owners that aren't "in the know" probably don't even know what a pollen filter is and this product would be aimed at them.

I have a horrible smell coming through my vents and will be changing my filter first before anything else. it has just been serviced but i would put money on the filter wasn't changed.

I used an aerosol freshener "bomb" a few years ago on the stinking aircon system of my 159. It had developed a smell like a rancid cats bottom. I bought an aerosol product from Comma - you put the air system on recirculate, trigger the aerosol, slam the door quickly and retire to a safe place for half an hour.
It certainly did the job - but you need to cover seat etc or they all get oversprayed. Effective though, especially when you replace the pollen filter at the same time.

Find the intake vent to your car, run the air-con, spray any household disinfectant spray into the vent, this will kill the bacteria in the system. I prefer the ones you dilute with water, Zoflora.

A clean pollen filter is a must before you try this.

Well my theory was confirmed, the pollen filter was filthy and black with a fair bit of plant matter stuck in the folds. Brand new pattern part now in. Will be a couple of days before i know if the smell has gone.

Were you charged for a filter in the service?
No idea, previous owners had it done, then traded it in. No receipts in the Service History, just a stamp.

This is why "Full service history" is worthless to me unles it includes the receipts. Stamps say nothing.

It is sometimes difficult to say how long the filter has been in the car. They do look black/grey after only a few weeks in the car.
