Hi guys,

Looking at an ad for a GTV V6 which look interesting . There's a couple of things listed on the description which have made me a bit concerned so would appreciate some advice before I contact the buyer (maybe he's on here :))

Says cambelt, tensioners, belts and water puper all changed on 3/10 but then 3 months later:

"Headgasket - both skimmed with all gaskets and sundries, plus another belt (06/10 @79k)"

Can anybody shed more light on this? Should I be worried & are there other questions I would ask in light of this?

Also:
"HPI clear - although it will show a recent plate change as I have removed my personal plate and also it was imported at date of manufacture."

Its RHD so guess I need to make sure its a UK spec car? Anything else I should check in light of this? I'd do an HPI anyway.

Maybe it affects insurance? Although I bought a 2nd hand Golf GTI around 6 years ago from a VW main dealer which was a RHD import from Malta and they said never mentioned it, I 1st saw it on the reg document  IIRC I never mentioned it my the insurers (mind you never made a claim duing my ownership so maybe I was lucky).

Any views greatly appreciated.

Cheers all.

I think you have to be suspicious but have an open mind! It would be easy to read something suspicious into the evidence that the cam belt was changed followed, less than four months later, by the skimming of the head but obviously the two are not necessarily linked. Do you know who did the work? A trusted indie or a main dealer?

If you compare the Gtv you are looking at, with others out there in a similar price bracket, how do they compare to the one you are looking at and what condition are they in? Is it cheaper than the others out there?

Hi George,

That sounds like my ad :)

I had a full belt change done, and shortly after the headgasket on the rear bank failed. Just bad luck I guess. It seems common due to a build up of heat back there. All done by a reputable Alfa specialist.

It is a UK spec import, and has never caused me issues with insurance. It came from Germany originally.

Any other questions, please ask :)
