Hi all,
Bit of advice needed from you wise ones out there please!

I am going away for 18 months and am not sure what to do with my Alfa (2004 147 JTD Lusso ~120k miles) - sell or store? I'll need a car when I come back and would like something similar at least (if I do sell it now).

Options as I see it are:
  1. Leave it in driveway
  2. Store it in a garage out of the elements (best price I can get for this is appx €700 for 18 months)
  3. Sell it (would get about €1,500-€2000?) and buy a car when I return
I've looked after it well and spent a bit of money on regular services etc. and it hasn't given me any trouble and is lovely to drive.

So, what do you guys think is best option? (mainly in terms of Bank of Me!). Maybe the solution is obvious, but I can't see it!

If I don't sell it, any tips for storing (disconnect battery?, ...)

Many thanks in advance for any advice/opinions.

If you know and are happy with the car, and it can be safely stored on the driveway, I'd say keep it. If you can get someone to start it and run it up to temperature every few weeks, maybe move it back and forward a few feet, that'll be the best way to store it. Otherwise, buy some axle stands and store it on them to avoid flat-spotting the tyres, and either take off the battery and store it off the car, with it getting a charge every now and then, for preference, or leave it on the car and get one of those solar-powered trickle chargers to keep it alive. Some dessicant packs inside the car will cut down the chance of mould if its going to be left stored untouched.

rgwm - many thanks for that advice and tips, very helpful. I have somebody that could start it regularly so that might be the way to go.

Pud237 - thanks, good idea - might be difficult to organise but hadn't thought about that.
