Long post but please read, it's important.

Insurance policy just expired with Equity Red Star through Adrian Flux. They were the cheapest in 2011 for my Gtv so naturally I went with them.

Here's where the fun begins. My policy was due to expire on 26/1/12, I am still waiting to recieve my policy renewal documents but have had a couple of letters telling me I should contact them to discuss my renewal. Now having done that last week, found out the renewal price would be £490 or thereabouts. Of course the first thing i did was to go online and shop around. Managed to get a price of £302 when my 8 years NCB are applied. Job jobbed.

I get on the phone to AF to discuss things, they cant get anywhere near my cheap quote so we decide not to take things further and they will forward on my letter of NCB entitlement so that I can then forward it on to my current insurer. All going as it should so far, as you would expect.

Wind the clock forward to today, 31/1/12, a couple of letters arrive at my house from AF. Open both only to find out that they both say I am entitled to zero NCB. Sod all. Nothing. I'm now thinking this is a misprint so I gets on the phone to AF and after explaining the story to them, I am told that because my car was insured on a classic car policy - which I didn't ask for, nor was I informed that it was such - the classic policy doesn't accrue any no claims bonus. Have you ever heard of this? Because it's a new one on me! So I ask them if they can forward on a letter to me for my current insurers proving that I have the previously built up 7 years NCB, prior to insuring with AF, they cannot do this as they were not the insurers from 2010-2011. So now basically at this point, I have no no claims bonus. Luckily, I have been onto that years insurers, Axa, and they can confirm that I am entitled to 7 years NCB and that proof is in the post for my current insurers.

The downside of all this of course is that I am an extra years NCB down and AF took my premium in 2011, which was around the £530 mark, by deception. Not disclosing facts that were crucial to my insurance policy and future insurance. AF, if you happen to read this then for your own sake, sort out your customer communication. You are getting an extremely bad reputation very quickly. Not disclosing information at the point of sale is disgusting, I am a years NCB down on where I should be and frankly, last years insurance is now meaningless and I am £530 out of pocket. For any new customers, beware of Adrian Flux putting you on a classic car policy and make sure you know if it will or won't earn you a year NCB and also ask them if they require proof of your previous earned no claims bonus, because they dont ask you for it and screw you over at renewal time and especially if you decide not to renew with them!

Customer service department were not very helpful either, fobbing me off with any lame excuse they could think of. You would be wise to avoid this company

Contact the Financial Services Authority Gaz, in your last insurance it should clearly state 'Classic Car Insurance' if it doesn't you have a case pal.:)

I'm not querying the Classic policy, at least not yet anyway.

I'm slightly ****ed off that everything was mis-sold and critical information was with-held

That is disgusting Gaz :mad: I've never heard of a car insurance policy that doesn't accrue NCB the longer you have it :confused: AF should get their act together and make sure you do not lose out because of their inadequate communications.

I get that now - albeit a year too late! It would have been rather nice for that information to be disclosed at the time of purchasing my policy

Incidentally, my current policy has gone up £49 as a result of this fiasco, not a massive amount i'll admit and certainly still good value compared to my renewal quote with AF. This new policy is also a classic car one but they have confirmed that it will earn me a years NCB. Unless I crash of course :lol:

They need to have clearly stated that it was "Classic Policy" to you Gaz, i would request a copy of the telephone conversation as your mis-sold argument may be credible as they sold you the cheapest policy available since this has been how 99% have chosen policy over last 2/3 yrs, they should also have stated that it did not accum NCB. However, if you had protected NCB and specified this on your quote with AF? I reckon you would have them over a barrel.;)

As above, you don't collect NCB on a Classic policy.
I have just checked my insurance certificate and it only mentions 'Classic' at the footer of the printed sheet.
There is no mention of NCB at all. I of course was told that I was accepting a classic policy and no NCB could be used or accrued.

Ah now thats an interesting point. They were quite happy to use my NCB when i took the policy out!

A thread in the 916 section regarding insurance/classic.

I should point out they still of course ask about accidents, claims, convictions etc.

I can understand the point of not building up a No claims discount whilst on a classic policy, But I have heard that a NCD is valid for 2 years.

Does that mean that you could have a classic policy for 2 years and end up with zero no claims at the end, or would it just revert back to the discount you had before you took it out, even if it was a while before?

Plenty of questions need answering.

Gaz yes I have heard of a classic car policy as I have one for my M5. And yes this is true that they don't accrue any NCD. My policy is with ERS directly and he explained that because the classic policy is one of the last bastions of sensible drivers. Stupid little oiks don't drive classics and if you are a classic car owner you generally take care with your classic. Ergo cheapy cheap premiums (£108.02 for mine) Now I'm not sure of the rules and regs but it would make sense that it should say on your policy "classic car insurance" and you should have been informed of this when you took it out.

So did I and it is usual AFAIK for them to be limited mileage policies.

I had a situation with Adrian Flux when I came to renew last year (September-ish). They couldn't match alternative quotes so I asked for my policy to end and proof of no claims entitlement to be sent. I should have had 9 years at this point but the document they sent me (by email - which I have no problem with) was an entitlement to just 6 years. Good job I checked and after a phonecall to CS and a few checks they sent me a new document.

It probably depends on whom your new policy is with but theoretically you lose it all I think. I had an old junker or two many years ago as a high miler muncher. Accrued about three years no claims which when I got rid of and bought a Classic, expired after two years. Gets me why your NCB is with the car and not the person.

They do but it varies with the company and car. Many told me my '97 Alfa Spider is not old enough but my '97 F355 is. The car type being the big factor I guess :confused:

I'm with AF underwtriter equity Red Star, but on a modified policy and the first thing I asked was does this policy gain me a NCB and was told yes, although I read it to be that way, but wanted to be sure.

I've had various classic insurances down the years and always understood the no claims situation as they don't award it. If I'm right you have to use your NCD within 2 years or lose it, my 2nd lot of bonus long gone because of this. I have a car on AF classic, agreed value with photographic proof, limited mileage. The term classic seems flexible, a 14 year old Corvette is, a 16 year old Alfa Spider is not.:confused:

Given that two AO staff members are openly pouring seemingly justifiable scorn on AF, shouldn't consideration be given to dissolving the commercial relationship that exists between the two entities?
