Aaaaaaaagggghhhh!! **Update**

EDIT: Managed to get Insurance at a better price by A-Plan. See my post (No: 14). Thanks to all those who helped.

Just had a quote for my new (to me) Alfa (standard, not modified).

Car as listed below (in signature) - I'am 29, have 9 years NCB, no accidents claims / points. Full comp protected NCB - and the cheapest I quote I have is £703!! (company called Allen & Allen).

Most quotes have been at the £950 - £1000, mark - with Adrian Flux quoting £950 ish - as does Elelephant, who have usually been able to offer the best deal until now. I have tried Moneysupermarket.com, and confused.com, and they were more expensive.

Norwhich Union, Direct Line etc wanted over £1400!!

Elephant had quote £600 for a a 02 model BMW 530d sport, and £650ish for a 02 model 530i Sport for me. I thought the Alfa (same insurance group) would be at worst the same as the BMW if not cheaper (surely the 530i sport in diesel or Petrol form) would seem more of a risk! The rest of the policy details (my details and address etc) were all the same.

Even Adrian Flux were mystified with this one. Help!!

Why so expensive? (I guess you don't know - stupid question)

Do you live in Beirut or something?

Have you tried Chris Knott Insurance? www.chrisknott.co.uk

My (old) Alfa is through them (with AROC membership)

I suppose it depends on where you live etc, but I have had good quotes from Hastings Direct, the Post Office and Budget in the past.

I don't know if you have tried these guys yet but if not, give them a go.

No disrespect, but Adrian Flux have never been able to give me a good quote on any car I have owned.

My main car has always been insured by Direct Line.

Would recommend them wholeheartedly.

Had heard that premiums come down considerably once you're past the "big 30" - but may be a myth!

Yep going to hit the yellow pages - have not been able to try ChrisKnott yet.

Live in Nottingham - Area is highish insurance, but the 530i quote was at the same address.

Hi
Agree, try privilege. I am in Manchester and I pay around 600£ for a 2006 Alfa 147, I have now 5 year no claims. But as you know Manchester is an expensive place to get car insurance!!! Using all kind of search on the web, they are the cheapest I found...
Going to be renewed end of November, I'll let you know if I find a cheaper one.
Cheers

I also live in Nottingham and have my year 2000 156 2.L TS with Virgin. I have 65% no claims, fully comp, no claim discount protection, uninsured loss recovery and breakdown cover [ well you never know!] all for £493. Oh yes and the wife is on it too. She has a 2l HGT 20v for about the same money. The bare insurance would be £343.35 I think thats not bad. I have also written off my first 156 September last year so I really think that is good. The no claim protection works!:)

Worth trying esure with all that no-claims. I'm same age as you with same amount of ncb (although I do have 3 points) and esure was cheaper than Adrian Flux who in turn was cheaper than the previously unbeatable Tesco.

Hi shaz try norwich union pay as you drive insurance the less miles you do the less insurance you pay. The only thing is they put a tracker in your motor but you also get smart nav and speed camera warning free for a month its worth just ringing for a quote

Just to update evryone.
Had tried Chris Knott, esure evreyone - and no one came close. So the inital cheapest quote I found of £703 was still the cheapest.

Noticed a thread on pistonheads, with alot of people stating A-plan had been able to beat quotes. Tried them - and Sucess!!

£569 fully comp, protected no claims, legal cover. Excess £200 (as with the others).

Link to the thread here:

A Plan Insurance -PistonHeads forum thread (Click)

Thought I would include this as they seem to be able to do a good deal.

Thanks for all who helped.

Hi Guys,

I've tried various insurance companies mentioned on here but i managed to come across a company called BrentAcre, they specialise vw insurance but me and friend got our alfas insured with them i got my 2000' GTV T.spark insured for £890 for 20k miles a year, with only one years no claims as I have had company cars before then, not bad for a young driver. Excess is £300.

I have a 2.5 156, 6 yrs NCB and pay £300 year fully comp with protection, about it going down after 30 it's not true, it made no difference to me this year, now 30! I've got 6 points and putting my wife brought the premium down - I use Morethan they quote online.

Good Luck!!

Hi there,
OK renewal for 2009... not with Privilege anymore, they increased their price by more than 100£ although my no claims discount is still extending!
I have now switched to e-sure. Cheaper than privilege last year, with lower excess, and no-claim discount protection!! Saving more than 120£ total!!
Cheers

with everyone looking at insurance thought I had better check mine (due in a couple of months)

What i dont understand is if I am willing to have an extra £250 excess my premium drops £10. surely if the worse happens I would be £240 out of pocket

however final cost - £350.64 full NCD protected, no voluntary excess, legal and vandalism cover - Post Office

Previous Insurers - Churchill have ramped up the prices after 3 years now over £500 from £362,

Oh and if you have had a claim with Churchill they do not allow you to protect your NCB
