However, one should note that the term soccer originated in the late 1890's England, as an abbreviation of the word "association" as in Football Association (FA).
Mmmmm.

Oh, while we're on it BF, how does "Calcio" translate?

Well "Calcio" is indeed the literal translation for the noun "kick" though the full name is Giuoco* Calcio. I guess people now know why Italian defenders are renowned for kicking the opponents' strikers throughout a game :D

* Giuoco being the old Italian word for Gioco (eg. game).

BTW, it's off a comic strip called Sheldon. It's from the US. And it's pretty witty as well. :)

bigfoot you a correct in saying that soccer is derived from the association part but its not football association(the FA) but association football which is the sports correct name. american football is called football because it is derived from association football, as are all other forms of footy,ie, aussie rules, rugby, etc, the only remaining links between association football and american football is the name, the pitch size,(approx the same size as there isnt a standard pitch size for a footy pitch) and the numbers of players

We had a big corp shindig last week
and one of the VPs, during a presentation,
made the quip that "sakker" is a game
played by 16 year-old girls.

300 odd people not laughing at a "Joke"
is so much better than boo-ing, don't you think?
