Having owned small hatches, large hatches, saloons, proper 4x4, and now a SUV I can say they do a brilliant job if you have a family. Think of them as a jack of all trades and master of non. I'm yet to find a pretty one but I will happily sacrifice style over practicality.
To many people , the SUV is like the leather jacket you wear to look 'ard. A nice leather jacket is probably a paradox. For my wife, her Kuga is just "nice because it's easy to drive". If you see one without the optional roof rails it looks wrong though. Too plain and kind of nice in theory, but do they get used? No.
