User manual and autodata say 5w for the 2.4 ... 6.5l of Castrol Edge will cost me over £60. I have some good quality, i think Total, 10w40 Fully Syn Low-SAPS kicking around.

Motor has done around 107k... good idea to use my stock or should i fork out for the Edge? Bear in mind im losing a liter or so every 3-5 months for the mean time due to leaks that im in the process of sourcing.

Currently Alfa seem to be ushing for 5W30, as it is slightly less viscous (improves Mpg), however, traditionally they advised 5w-40. If you live somewhere cold like scandanavia, 0w30/ 0w40 would work too.
10W40 might not lubricate the engine enough at lower temperatures.

You would probably get away with the 10w-40, especially in summer but I would probably stick it in the Mrs car and use the proper stuff in the Alfa.
