I just took part in a "Readers Review" of the new 2012 VW Beetle for Whatcar? Got to see it in the metal at VW HQ in Milton Keynes (Ooo!)

Must say it's actually a great looking car in the metal - much more masculine with a superb interior with excellent quality. I'd NEVER buy the previous model as it's nothing more than a novelty, toy-like affair and not a car that I associate with the word "sporty" IMO.

The new model IS sporty in it's design and looks Porshe-esque from some angles. I'd have to drive one obviously for a better opinion but it seems like an excellent replacement and a step in the right direction.

Just wondered what you lot thought of it!

Only seen pics and read reviews...

it's a better resolved design than the original 'new' Beetle.
However, I have to ask, why on earth should a Beetle be sporty? If you wanty a sporty VW, get a Golf GTI or Scirocco. The Beetle has an appeal on a different level, one for just cruising and enjoying life, not racing from A to B..... ;)

Now awaits those who decry these and similar cars as retro pastiches and style over substance etc etc etc

less curves, more straight lines. Just like the new straight Passat.

which is a good looking car IMO:thumbs:
I don't agree, it looks so boring:(
although the estate version outshines the saloon

No no the Beetle doesn't HAVE to be sporty; but it does personally for me if it's going to get my attention. I like sporty cars but also want something different that isn't "common" (hence I own an Alfa). Would never be interested in a sporty Golf as it's just dull as dishwater to look at (to me!)

Flower vase is gone too! Interior was very nice - not gawdy or overly retro but inspired by 70s Beetles. Excellent finish inside. :)
