Hello all

New to the forum but long time Alfa owner. Currently rebuilding my 74 GTV but a long time since I stripped it and never took enough photos or wrote enough stuff down.
I've just fitted the steering box and I'm left with a gap of about 5mm between the body and the lugs on the box. Steering column runs true through the support tube and all looks good from the inside. Is it normal to have to shim the box? I could draw it in on the bolts but don't want to put a side load on the system especially as the casings are prone to cracking

were there no spacers when you removed the box?
there was a TSB that you had to follow to correctly align the box using spacers on the box and on the column mount
Later the individual spacers became a triangular plate

Here is a copy of that TSB

Perfect, many thanks for that. No idea if spacers were there originally, 7 years since I stripped the car and it all got a bit mixed up during house move. Not clear what thickness they should be but I've got some 4mm thick ones which seem to fit nicely
