like the title says car is still overheating, its been a while since ive been on here but i just started up the car today and let it run for about 10-15 mins and the car just died. could it be the water pump? the cooling fan does not come on either, i also took the thermostat housing off to see if the thermostat was stuck or anything but there was no thermostat. any help would greatly be appreciated. from all the searching i have done on here im assuming its the water pump not working properly if so how hard is it to change it out?

Does it lose water ? if not could be the radiator.
Just done the radiator on my TS today and the radiator was a right mess(see the pictures on my thread "radiator is ex radiator "posted yesterday to see the pictures ) the radiators on 166,s are an achiles heel and i have now replaced them on every 166 i have owned ,I couldt see the extent of the mess the radiator was in untill i removed the fan etc. I am told that TS,s dont suffer with pump problems to the same extent as V6 or so im told.
Also sounds like your fan could be at fault ,on mine it kicks in quite regularly whilst it is reaching max temp at a slowish speed and if need be when it gets hotter it goes on full blast.

Don't run it for too long as you'll warp the head quite easily.

What did the temperature guage get up to? Sounds like a multitude of faults together, probably a poor radiator and knackered fan relay or bad contact on the fan connector itself (had all of thee faults personally)

@ alfaaddicted no the car does not lose any water, as for checking the radiator how do i go about doing this?
@147 dav thanks im still new to the alfa romeo side and ill have another look at it.....and where and how do i go about checking the crank sensor?
@ laptop matt as soon as it hits 90 on the guage it shuts off and the red light comes on it feels like a electrical problem to me but with the alfa romeo being new to me i can not seem to pin point the problem, can i check them with a volt meter?

Hi well just in case you have not seen them i will show you the mess a 166 rad can get into but they also silt up inside and restrict cooling as i said this is a problem i have come across 4 times on 166,s
If you look behind the fan you can see if the radiator is falling to pieces more so if you take the fan off (10 min job ) on a ts. But silting up cannot be spotted and that was the problem on my first 166 when it was only 2 1/2 years old my current one is a 2005 and only done 57000 but the radiator is bucked.

When my radiator went the Temp went over 110 and the fans were battling to get it back down to 90. The outside of the rad looked ok but they start deteriorating from the inside. The car never cut out even at its worse so I dont think that is your problem.

Does sound like crank sensor as cutting out at only 90 degrees is not overheating.

I've seen it near the starter motor but have never had to change that so Cant help you unfortunately.
I dont think you can test it, just replace it.
I'm sure someone will respond with more details on doing so.
