I am about to remove door to replace the standard in car kit, seen lots of interesting options....:D Keen to refit doors with 2 way components, but not sue on the rears?
I have a sub in a box form JBL so thats going in too, any thoughts for those in the know?

Bythe way I am not looking to spend £1000's just want a nice sound, the original head has already been replaced for a low end Pioneer unit that works with iPhone/iPod/USB stick. This is my main source of audio (occasional radio) pretty wide and eclectic range of listening. But do like a nice bit of bass....who doesnt !!!

Many thanks (any pics would be great if possible) I am searching posts to find out what I can also....if you can direct me to anything suitable?

cheers T:cool:

Because rear speakers are primarily for the rear passengers, I generally tell people not to bother upgrading unless you think it's a high priority. Ordinarily, with only you in the car, you would 'fade' towards the front, and keep the music 'infront of your ears', for better lifelike sound.

Hence, for example, you'll achieve better sound with $300 front speakers compared with $150 fronts and $150 rears. If you do wish to upgrade the rears, then some cheapish 2-way coaxials will suffice.

For nice quality, not overly expensive speakers, look into entry level models from Focal, Morel, Boston Acoustics, Hertz, DLS, etc. Generally all better quality than mainstream brands like Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine, etc, which I usually only recommend for headunits; these aren't terrible, but not best in class IMO.

Thank you shiny_car.... much appreciated:thumbs:

I am sure shiny_car is in the 'expert' category of ICE and refits/upgrades and his opinion is highly regarded and appreciated (from many many posts).
Be nice to share their experiences or words of wisdom from lesser mortals such as I....:)

Cheers T

No probs! I am just as enthusiaststic about the most basic of upgrades, as I am about high-end competition systems. And there's no 'right or wrong' about it; for example, some people love having loud rear speakers, with a lot of music coming from behind them. I have no criticism of this, if that's what they enjoy listening to.

But generally, focus on the front speakers, much more than the rears, if you are on a tight budget, and want best bang for buck.

In the 156, the factory speakers are lightweight, and have only small frames/magnets. They are screwed directly to the door trims (with the screws passing into the metal door, for strength/rigidity). It means that many aftermarket speakers do not fit easily, because their frames/magnets are bigger. So you usually have to trim away some plastic, but this is usually easy.

However, I found best results by cutting out a larger section of the plastic door trim (but leaving enough around the edge to still hold the factory speaker grill). Then, cut a spacer (from mdf wood) that you attach to the metal door, then screw the speaker to the spacer. It means you can fit virtually whatever 6.5-7" speaker you like.

These photos are not particularly clear, but there are some of the doors in this gallery, of my old 156:
