Just back from visiting our folks in Swansea. There and back plus some town driving (372 miles) and the car's still not empty.

The traffic on Friday evening was awful and I took it easy coming back today (77mph with the odd 80+ overtake).

The impressive bit is the car was fully laden.

Four big adults, a Black Labrador, a Westie & a boot chock full of luggage.

I set the tyres correctly prior to leaving though.

Trip B for the home journey (175 miles) showed 32.1mpg.

Not reset trip A for over 1k miles and that's at 27.8mpg with most of that driven quite hard.

So, yet again, proof positive that a 2.2 JTS can be economical:thumbs:

I can comfortably get to the far side of 500 in my 2.4 - but rather naughtily, I do fill it right to the brim rather than just to the first click. A heavily loaded car does make a surprising difference to the consumption - in fact, even just one passenger makes a noticable difference I find.

I had 430 miles out of my V6, took about 61 litres to fill back up again - 32mpg. So even on an old, out-dated engine, not pulling much weight around does mean you can get quite good fuel consumption figures. I regularly used to do over 600 miles to the tank in my 2.4 JTD, when I just had the first remap done. 2nd one knocked fuel economy down by quite a bit..

Will be getting a 159 one day for sure, probably a diesel one though.

I've just started using super diesel or what ever the hell it's called :p It's bumped my mpg up by almost 5.
I'm now getting about 49 mpg on motorway driving :) I had know idea it made any difference tbh.
I'm well chuffed.
Chris.

*EDIT* forgot to mention....thats with a boot full of tools too :wow:!

I was not impressed with that SR, sorry! I am with 159john in that on a decent run 500 miles should be easily acheivable from a tank. Is there not some industry rule (or am I just imagining it!) that a car should be able to do 450 miles on a tank, hence the differing tank sizes.

When on a run such as you have just done I have seen my range showing close to 700 miles! All my cars (including 3.2 V6 Alfa's) have been capable of my home to virtually Dover on a tank - Around 500 miles.

Anyway you are happy so just ignore us! :D

No the Brera tank is 70 litres, I filled mine a few times with 68 litres. Problem is once the light comes on you have no idea as to how far you can go. Depending how you drive you might get 40 miles or 20 miles.

I had a BMW a few years ago that would count all the way down to 1 mile remaining, which I did once and lucky for me it was accurate.:):)

Jeremy Clarkson did a run in a Jag diesel from somewhere in Europe to Blackpool on a tankful. The range went down to zero long before he got to Blackpool, but the car was still running. When they drained the tank, they found that there was still enough for somethoing like another 100 miles. It suggests (if this is typical) that the Range display errs very much on the cautious side!! I'm certainly not volunteering to test this out on the Alfa.......think that's down to one of the Petrol boys - they're easier to start after they've been run dry!

Thats respectable mpg from a petrol.

I've only ever filled the tank in the GT once (last weekend as it goes), roughly gave me 500 miles and thats a diesel with mostly motorway driving!!!

Could of done better but smoking brera's on the M25 is to much fun ;) :p

Tip top fella.. I am in agreement I have used my 2.2 from leic to london on many occassions and it returns about 33 mpg on that run driving normaly (beats the 29mpg out of my comapnay 3 series)and i can wretch it down to about 22mpg driving it as alfa intended  best so far is 360mls and the light comes on and its a mad dash to the nearest station having owned a few optamistic alfa fuel gauges ..:p weird how you mention mpg and all the derv burners come running lol

#20 ·
Thinking about it, I'm pretty sure thats better consumption than my 2.0 JTS and that was in a lighter car.

Derv not really the point - as tony44 states much more should be acheivable from a 70 litre tank.

If SR averaged around 30mpg on journey then should be possible to get 450 miles, Is the range counter out that much?. My Brera is derv but my 166s were not 3.0V6 and 3.2V6 and had same 70 litre tanks - On a good run I could get 500 miles from the tank easy.

But wwas your tank empty? Point I am making is that range indicator is possibly not very accurate. You may have still had 100 miles in the tank!?

#25 ·
68 litres of petrol would indicate the tank was very near empty.

2.2drivers are saying they are getting good economy yet they are not getting any thing like the mileage out of their tanks, there's something amiss someplace and I would suggest the inaccuracy is the computer and the owners not doing brim to brim checks.

I for one don't believe it's possible to get 32mpg out of a 2.2 over a complete tank, I tried my upmost to get the best possible mpg many many times.

I think the computer is very pessimistic. I recently filled up with the light on and computer indicating limited cruising range. I filled up with the tank with 60.5 litres (couldn't get anymore in!) so there was still nearly 10 litres left in tank.
At this point i had done 500 mostly A road/motorway miles (38 mpg, not driving like a granny) meaning there was potentially another 84miles in the tank.

Anyway I must say that after getting about 280miles out of my old 155 V6 and after reading
all the negative posts on here, I'm well chuffed after 1750 miles! :)

Forum Police:confused: That's me;)

I usually drive the car hard (not thrash it mind you) and I get c22-24mpg. I love the way it sounds when "extended"

That is terrible mileage SR! I got more than that out of my V6's when driving them as Alfa intended. I was thinking about a Brera S or SV6 in the future so will have to expect very poor mpg :(, and to think that there is a sticky thread complaining about the JTDM mpg!!!

#31 ·
I had a chance of a massive saving on a Brera S (5k+) but with the poor fuel economy, tyre wear and servicing costs there was no point, hence i chopped my Brera in for a Scirocco that will near enough pay for itself with the money I'm saving in not running a Brera. Not only that I've only had the Rocco a week and I can honestly say it out performs the Brera in most departments.

I don't even believe that the new 1750 petrol engine will be good enough in comparison to the competition.

I don't intend to knock Alfa I've left the marque twice before and come back and I'm sure I will come back in the future, but they have an awful lot of work to do.

#32 ·
I like the scirocco but dont think it would do it for me, I can not tear myself away from Alfa - What deal were you getting on the Brera S?

I think it would have to be the V6 if the mpg is that poor in the 2.2 it seems pointless to me!?

Some of us aren't just tickled pink by high mpg. Some of us need it to justify half normal mpg to buy a brera.

To be honest I've had enough of the whole 2.2 v 2.4 v 3.0 argument. for some of use it was the devel's juice or nothing!

Having driven all variants though the diesel is the best, lets face it, it's no sports car!
