Guys

2.0 JTS this has concerned me since i bought the car, it Rattles-piston slapish under hard acceleration and as i engage the clutch after a gear change at speed any ideas?

I though it might of been a timing belt isssue so i've done a full belt change including the varaitor and did find a few alarming things but that in an other thread, http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-147-156-and-gt/175464-how-long-do-you-reckon-this-cam-belt-has-been.html...

I suspect either actual piston slap, or a clutch issue...

Piston slap is normally worse when the engine is cold. (pistons expand more than the bore so clearance gets taken up)

It does sound like a top end/belt related issue to me.

I seems worse when engine under load, top end sounds sweet after CAM belt change but i wont rule it out... I dont think its piston slap...

I don't think its piston slap. I think piston slap tends to get less under load.

Where did you get the cambelt done? A specialist or a regular garage.

I think you can see where I am going with this. ;)

The first CAM belt was done 15k ago by a knob head local garage, the second one i did myself... i've linked my findings on the above post's...

I'm happy with top end a didnt check tappets so when i have time i might get another belt pull out cam's and check tappets...

Well the tappets are hydraulic so if they rattle it is normally down to low oil pressure.

Unless one of them is sticking or the bore it sits into is worn.

I realise the tappets are hydrolic and even after a good oil service its no different... Its just sounds like something is rattling i'd love to strip the engine down and find out what it is, but no money to put it back together...

I'm actually on the hunt for a damaged JTS engine which i can strip and overhaul if anyone has one that they no longer what let me know...

Have you tried removing the cam cover and taking a look? Some cars have suffered worn cam lobes and that will cause a top end rattle.

That was the first thing i checked before i changed the CAM belt...

bearing wear on the conrod possibly small end bearing as a result of a snapped cambelt repair in the past and the damaged piston being left in the car ,, this type of damages throws off the balance in the piston wearing the bearings or the bearing was damaged at the time
note it wont show up as low oil pressure if its the small bearing in the conrod

drain the oil stirring in a magnet into the drained oil,, i dont know if the sump plug is magnetic on these? check for bearing debris,, or if its a shell failure it may have a gold bronze like metalic flake in the oil,, best be safe

Another way of doing it is to pull out the dipstick just after the engine has been run.

Then allow the oil on the dipstick to run down the edge of a glass. You can often see metal particles if you hold it up to the light. :)

You may laugh at this, its just a sugestion. Could it be a cracked/holed exhaust manifold? Leaking exhaust manifold gasket, this can sound very bad, if its got a bad crack. Had it on my Calibra, thought the engine had piston slap. Take your manifold heatshield off and have a look, it would possibly sound quieter when warmed up and would have got worse over time. As for the cambelt, Ive had this on a Corsa fitted by my local Vauxhall garage, only noticed when I had to replace the head gasket meself due to lack of funds, then realised what they had done. Every cambelt after that, even the 147 1.6 ts Ive just bought the misses Ive done meself. The mechanics are told just to hold the tensioner back, slide the old belt off and the new one on. if the tension is out, its out(I dont do this meself!). If youve had a ts belt off youll realise there is no way you could do this, hence the belt being stupidly loose. The cam sprockets on the 1.6 ts I did needed the sprockets adjusting to be properly aligned with the belt and the cams timing with cam locks. Youve been unlucky with yours by the looks of it. Might be worth doing a compression check? That way couldnt you tell if all the valves are closing fully on to the seats? That could give a bad rattle, if theyve colided with the pistons because of the belt issue? Might be worth doing just to be sure? What do others think? Or am I going the wrong way with this?
