I’ve owned my 2.0 jtdm ti sw for a couple of years now. When I bought it the previous owner had fitted a duplex exhaust with deleted back boxes. My car is white and the rear picks up sooty deposits and general crap rather quickly. The tail pipes are pretty sooty and although the car is remapped I don’t suffer from excessive smoke from the exhausts under heavy load. The car is always serviced by an Alfa specialist and I never have any problems with the MOT. The DPF is also present and correct. My question basically is what exactly do the back boxes do and would reinstating them have any positive effect on the deposits from the exhaust?

Its just a silencer (a virtually empty one!)...so wont affect the amount of smuts coming out. My 2.0 JTDm also has a duplex system (2.4 centre pipe and 2 straight through HKS silencers)....and was no louder after I deleted the silencer than before as the turbo and the DPF do most of the silencing. No soot on my rear bumper. The DPF should catch all the soot...is it in place?

DPF is present and doing its thing. There’s a distinctive change in engine tone (and fuel consumption) when it’s doing a regen. Thing is, the bumper isn’t specifically dirty. It’s more like an even distribution over the whole rear. (It’s a Sport Wagon). Are the exhaust tips of your car relatively clean? Mine are pretty black inside

Mine are black inside....mainly because I sprayed them matt black because i did not like the dirty stainless steel look they had after a few weeks of use! Most diesels are black inside the tailpipes though.
