Hi this is my first post, i put down a deposit on a 6 month old 2.0 JTDM 170 Veloce on Monday, but after looking up the details on the DVLA website I discovered it is actually a 140bhp engine.
I rang the dealer immediately who went a double checked the information and discovered it was indeed a 140bhp engine. He has offered me a £500 discount on the price I paid which I am kind of ok with.

The thing is I really liked the car and it seemed very quick off the mark (I currently have a 210bhp Saab Aero) but the boy racer in me feels a bit gutted its only 140bhp not 170bhp.

On paper it doesn't make much difference to acceleration and top speed, can you let me have your experiences of driving the 140 and 170 diesels?

What about depreciation will the more economical/cheaper tax £30 quid a year !! 140 holds its value better than the 170?

I'm picking the car up on Tuesday so any advice would be appreciated :)

thanks

Mark

Are you sure it is not just incorrectly registered with the DVLA? They do make an awful lot of cockups with new car registrations. A check of the chassis number on ePer would tell you for sure.

my diesel 159 is down as a petrol, but it is in the correct tax band. V5C currently with DVLA who are hopefully changing it.........it's been a long time though :(

did you buy it from a dealer starting with M ?
I was talking to a couple who ordered a Giulietta from them in a particular grey and went to collect it only to find the dealer had sold their car .They were expected to change their insurance etc to one in another colour when they arrived to collect it.They did as they had travelled a long way......

No it ws them it was Corkhills in Cheshire, the car was first registered with them and stated 'petrol' instead of 'diesel' on the V5C. Don't know who screwed up, the garage or DVLA, as I say it is taxed a diesel  but when it came to the insurance it was a bit of a nightare convincing them it was a diesel and not a petrol so I want it sorted out for this reason too.

back to the original Q:
140 JTDm is a lovely, smooth, economical engine that is plenty quick enough for the chasis but won't scare too many people in a drag race. it may help extend your life by creating zen like calm in your soul and your bank balance

170 JTDm is the same to sit in, but is less economical, unless you drive like a nun. If you pick your moment in D mode it is fast enough in the gears where it counts to make Nissan 350Z / BMW 330 / Crysler Crossfire owners stop and check their eyeballs. It will eat more diesel and more front tyres (~18k miles on PZero Rosso).

To make more power, more fuel needs to be burnt - simples. So when the 140 engine is making the same power as the 170 engine (at low revs, light throttle loads etc) then they will use roughly the same amount of fuel. The 170 has a greater capacity to make more power, so its capacity to burn fuel is also increased. I think they feel roughly the same to drive, its only when you put your boot down you notice the extra grunt.

Remap the 140?
Yes you would probably get in the region of 170-180bhp. But I imagine the 170 will remap to 200-210. It has a different turbo to the 140bhp and by the looks of it different fuel injectors also.

Thanks for your comments everyone, I pick it up tomorrow and I can't wait :) I've got over it not being 170, I know i'll love it.
Enjoy:thumbs:

Remap the 140?
that might take it 170bhp, but you would probably need other mods to get there (and the usual insurance caveats). But the 170 engine is not mechanically identical to the 140 engine (threads on this forum and elsewhere) and the £900 price is quite possibly less than the cost of remap+mods+particulate trap removal+insurance
