Hi,

Looking for some advice from your collective knowledge. A lot of this has been said before but not sure on the next steps.

A couple of weeks ago the car started to just lose some urgency, subtle at the beginning, but by the end it had no useful acceleration of any consequence. It then started to run on less than 6 cylinders, probably down to 4 in the end!

So at the beginning l went through the ECU reset to no effect, l removed the MAF and it made no difference, there was a small split in the flexi hose so repaired that with self amalgamating tape and that made no difference either.

Then last week l limped home with no acceleration at all until 5000rpm but clearly missing on one cylinder. Took to the local garage who have looked after both my 166s. Their view was afterr discussion they would start with plugs and coil packs but couldn't look at the car until late next week. So got my spanners out took off the plenum and replaced the plugs. After that it started but ran very rough, to be honest it sounded as if it is going to destroy itself. Turned off and then wouldn't start. So stripped it down again, 90 min start to finish, checked evrything all OK but this time swapped the coil packs back to front. It then restarted but again sounds like bag of nails on self destruct.

So next steps me thinks some new/used coil packs to swap about and check if that is the problem.

Any advice greatly received?

No advice to give sadly.

You're in Kent, the two Alfa specialists that I'd use to help are:

SDR Autos near Wadhurst (actually East Sussex, not Kent)

or

Day & White's at Brands Hatch. These guys REALLY know V6s.

If it all goes totally pear-shaped, come and buy mine!

Yes disconnected the MAF and took it for a spin and it made not difference at all. There are no Error Codes on the EDBII code reader either. lt is a bit of a bu**er and I'm none he wiser at all.

The engine sounds really rattly and to be honest l'm wondering if the cambelt has jumped a tooth or two. Would this generate an Error Code?

Could it be a falure in the electrics some where or a bad earth/contact?

Just about to order some Coil Packs to elemenate that before it goes to the garage next week.

MAF and/or coil packs would throw up fault codes surely? I had both fail on my 156 and both gave me codes. I think I'd invest in diagnostic cables if I had a 166...

Edit: posted same time as you. Now I know you have a fault code reader.

I had similar problem with my old alfa 166 3.0, missfire until rev 5000 , lack of power, until i have changed the MAF sensor, remember if power comes from 5000 rpm your engine going to emergency mode, so basicly its sensor thing, my alfa had lack of power till 5000 rpm, after that different car in my case was MAF sensor, disconnection MAF didnt help, i paid 120 for new MAF but i wasnt sure , luckly it was the MAF :)

Rafik, hi so maybe it is the MAF, l have a spare one which l fitted but it made no difference. To be honest l have no idea if the second MAF l have is any good it came with an airbox l bought. So that may not be a positive check!

Just to check the missfire you had, how bad was it? Mine sounds very rattlely and is clearly not firing on at least on cylinder. Even when l get to 5000 rpm it still sounds very rough. I've booked it in to the garage for Wednesday so perhaps they will find something....

I had a problem with lack of power , after 5000 rpm was great, below 5000 rpm no power, missifire and alfa was very slow, if you have that problem after 5000 , MAF sensor wont help you, if you have alfadiag check fault codes. I have alfadiag but i live near heathrow airport , you can visit me and we can check your problem

Pomeo thanks for the advice.

My problem is slightly different. The engine will rev reasonably freely but just sounds like the veritable bag of nails..... This was preceded by the lack of power below 5000 as previously stated. Sounds as if I could do worse than buy a new 'Vauxhall' MAF. Is there a difference in MAFs between CF 2/CF3 does any one know before I buy one?
